Who needs a sticker

A tertiary ID sticker gives eligible students access to the 40% tertiary fare discount on public transport services in Auckland.

You will need a sticker to apply for the tertiary student concession if:

  • you use an AT HOP card that someone else manages (for example, your AT HOP profile is managed by a parent)
  • you attend an education provider other than University of Auckland (UoA), AUT or Massey University.

You might also need a sticker if you attend UoA, AUT or Massey but cannot apply online.

For more information about how to get the concession, go to Tertiary student concession.

How to get a tertiary ID sticker

To get a sticker, contact your institution’s student support team. This may be called a student hub, student services, reception, enrolment office and so on.

Who is eligible

You need to be a full-time student. There are 2 ways to prove this. You can show us:

  • the number of credits you are enrolled in
  • your ‘equivalent full-time student’ value (EFTS).

In general:

  • 0.125 EFTS equals 15 credits
  • 0.4 EFTS equals 48 credits
  • 0.8 EFTS equals 96 credits.

For more information about EFTS, go to the StudyLink website (opens in a new tab).

There are 2 different stickers (with different requirements) for full-year and part-year students.

Full-year, full-time students

To qualify for an orange full-year sticker, you need to:

  • be enrolled in at least 0.8 EFTS (96 credits or points)
  • study full-time for at least 32 consecutive weeks.

Full-year stickers expire 31 March of the following year.

Part-year, full-time students

To qualify for a grey part-year sticker, you need to:

  • be enrolled in at least 0.4 EFTS (48 credits or points)
  • study full-time for at least 16 consecutive weeks
  • complete the study period continuously (not spread across the year).

Part-year stickers expire 31 August of the same year.

If you do not meet the requirements

You may still be eligible for a tertiary ID sticker if you:

  • study at a non‑Auckland institute with an Auckland campus
  • are a limited full‑time student.

What is a limited full-time student

Limited full-time is when we consider you as a full-time student even though you're studying part-time. For StudyLink to consider you a limited full-time student, you must have a good reason. For example, a serious medical condition or disability. For more information, go to the StudyLink website (opens in a new tab).

Apply as a special-case student

If this applies, complete the special-case student application form.

You will need to provide supporting documents, such as:

  • a StudyLink limited full‑time approval letter
  • proof of course fees paid
  • confirmation of enrolment.

After signing up

You need to carry a valid student ID card or student digital ID with you. Auckland Transport staff may ask to see your ID when you use the tertiary student concession.

Concessions expire on the same date as the AT Tertiary ID sticker or the student ID (whichever is earlier).
