Location

Moyle Park shared path

Transport involved

Walking and cycling

Overview

We are upgrading the Moyle Park shared path between the Bader Drive shared path entrance and the Māngere Centre Park footbridge over SH20.

This shared path is a well‑used link for people walking and cycling to reach Māngere Centre Park, local
schools, sports clubs, marae and nearby homes.

The upgrades will make the route wider, safer and more comfortable for everyone, encouraging more people to walk, bike and wheel for everyday trips.

The improvements we’re making

  • Widening the shared path to 4m.
  • Widening the path between the two motorway bridges to 3.5m.
  • Refreshing worn or uneven surface areas.
  • Adding clearer markings on the shared path.
  • Trimming vegetation where needed to improve visibility.

What’s not changing

We are not making any changes to the two motorway footbridges between Moyle Park and Māngere Centre Park.

How this project connects to the wider network (Connected Māngere)

This upgrade strengthens a key off‑road link between Bader Drive (the end of the Māngere West cycling route) and the shared paths through Māngere Centre Park, improving continuity between older and newer sections of the network.

It also connects more smoothly to the eastern part Māngere Centre Park shared path, between Robertson Road and the SH20 footbridge, completed in February 2025.

Together, these links support a more connected walking and cycling network across Māngere and help set up future connections toward Favona and surrounding areas such as Ōtāhuhu, Middlemore and Papatoetoe (and beyond).

Latest updates

Construction is planned to begin in Autumn 2026 will inform the community before works begin and share confirmed timing and any impacts.

Project benefits

Safer, wider path

More space for people walking, cycling, using mobility aids and families with prams to move comfortably.

Better off‑road links

Stronger off‑road connections that help people avoid busy roads for everyday trips.

Stronger network connection

Helps connect older and newer shared path sections, supporting a more continuous walking and cycling route through Māngere.

Project background

Māngere is growing, and we need to future‑proof connections so streets and paths work for all the ways people travel.

Improving walking and cycling supports more travel choices, improves community hauora (wellbeing) and helps reduce congestion.

Much of Māngere is flat and well‑suited to cycling, and the area has a high concentration of schools and young people.

In 2018, 61% of Māngere residents travelled short, bikeable distances to work and education.

The existing path begins at Bader Drive and connects to the newer shared path through Māngere Centre Park.

The current path is about 3m wide in places, while the newer shared path is 4m wide.

This project widens the existing path to make it easier and more comfortable to walk, cycle and wheel.

This shared path is a well‑used link for people walking and cycling to reach Māngere Centre Park, local schools, sports clubs, marae and nearby homes.
