Walking and drivingOverview
We're proposing changes to Queen Street and Kitchener Road in Waiuku. These changes will make the intersection safer and more accessible for everyone.
Before June 2027, we're planning to:
- install a new zebra crossing with tactile pavers outside number 53 Queen Street
- shorten the crossing distance at the Kitchener Road and Queen Street intersection by building out the kerbs
- add new pram crossings with tactile pavers across Kitchener Road
- add high-friction surfacing for the westbound approach to the existing zebra crossing outside number 3 Kitchener Road, making it more visible to drivers
- re-mark and install new broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) and reconstruct footpaths where needed.
As a result of these changes, there will be a net loss of 1 parking space on Queen Street. This will include:
- 3 parking spaces being removed outside 53 Queen Street
- 1 parking space being added outside 48 Queen Street
- 1 parking space being added outside Kitchener Road.

Project background
Currently, there aren’t enough safe places for people to cross Queen Street between Kitchener Road and Victoria Avenue, which has been a safety concern for the community.
In the past, two people were injured while crossing Kitchener Road. The current road layout isn’t easy for people to move around, which means accidents are more likely.
By making these improvements, we’ll create a safer, more accessible, and better-connected space for everyone who lives, works, or visits Waiuku town centre.
