Walking, driving and busOverview
We’ll soon start construction to make Saint Georges Bay Road safer for pedestrians. The improvements will be near the intersection with Cleveland Road and Garfield Street, and between Kenwyn Street and Faraday Street.
We expect works to take around 6 months. To lessen disruption, we are finding ways to do the work quicker where possible.
What we’re delivering
We’re building 3 new ‘at grade’ zebra crossings with kerb extensions. That includes 2 at the Cleveland Road and Garfield Street intersection and one outside 114 Saint Georges Bay Road. ‘At grade’ means they’re at ground level.
We’ll also:
- change rideshare and mobility parking at the intersection to improve wheelchair and pram access
- resurface roads and upgrade footpaths, kerbs and drainage as part of our maintenance programme
- plant one new tree near the Cleveland Road and Garfield Street crossing
- improve the parking layout on Kenwyn Street, Faraday Street and Watt Street with no net loss of on street parking.

Project background
In July 2025, we said that construction was planned to start early in the year. We shared the final drawings on our website in September 2025.
Construction was delayed due to limited resources and the need to coordinate with other works in the area to lessen disruption. We appreciate your patience and now expect construction to start in July 2026.
