2026

End date

2027

Location

Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue, Manurewa

Transport involved

Walking, driving, bus and cycling

Overview

Before June 2027, we’re planning to:

  • build a new mountable roundabout (one you can drive over)
  • upgrade the pedestrian refuge island on Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue
  • build side islands on Weymouth Road to help guide vehicles safely into the roundabout
  • realign a nearby vehicle driveway to support the new roundabout
  • design an intersection that is safe for buses and trucks.

There will be no loss of parking.

By installing a roundabout, we want to help you move through this busy area more safely and comfortably.

Project benefits

Safer speeds through the intersection

The new roundabout road layout will reduce the speed of vehicles and make it safer when crossing the intersection.

Safer turning movements

The roundabout will help manage turning movements and reduce the crash risk at this high-risk intersection, particularly for Rowandale Avenue.

Clearer road layout

The road surface, signs and road markings upgrades will make them clearer and easier to understand.

Safer crossings

New pedestrian crossings will make it safer and easier for people to cross at the intersection.

Project background

We want to make Weymouth Road safer and easier for everyone in the community, so we’re rolling out safety improvements step by step.

Our first step is to build a new roundabout at the Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue intersection.

We chose this intersection because:

  • lots of people walk here
  • there are nearby schools and sports fields
  • there are bus stops bringing many pedestrians.

The roundabout will help slow down vehicles and make turning safer and easier. It will improve safety for drivers, walkers and cyclists.

Weymouth Road, between Roscommon Road and Friedlander Road has seen a lot of crashes in recent years. It is a high-risk area. From 2020 to 2024, there were 44 crashes. Seven caused serious injuries and 12 resulted in minor injuries. Over a third of these were due to vehicles losing control, and 3 involved pedestrians. More recently, from 2025 to 2026, another 10 crashes were reported, including 3 serious and 4 minor injuries.

After the roundabout is finished, we will see how things go. We will look at whether more safety improvements are needed for other parts of Weymouth Road in future stages.
