As part of Auckland Transport’s (AT) mission to help more people get to more places more often, we have introduced new and improved bus services for west and northwest Auckland.

The new services and routes, which started on Sunday 14 June, provide more frequent buses, giving reliable access to shopping, schools and rail connections, more trips at peak times and later bus trips for customers catching ferries in the evening. Two of the improved routes become frequent routes, bringing the number of Auckland’s frequent routes to 45 (frequent routes run every 15 minutes, 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week).

The range of areas that will benefit include Glen Eden, Titirangi, Laingholm, Whenuapai, New Lynn, Henderson, Te Atatū Peninsula, Hobsonville, Huapai, Helensville, Riverhead, Coatesville and Albany.

Waitākere Councillor and Deputy Chair of Council's Transport and Infrastructure Delivery Committee, Shane Henderson, says the new services will be welcomed by locals.

“West Auckland is seeing some massive population growth and these public transport improvements will provide better travel options for current and future residents.

“On a number of routes the frequency of buses has doubled, halving the previous waiting time. This means faster connections to local destinations and rapid services like trains and the WX1.”

Group Manager Public Transport Operations Rachel Cara says it’s an exciting step for those in the west and northwest.

“With the local population growing, we are offering new services, greater frequency and more destinations to help Auckland thrive. This will also benefit Auckland’s wider public transport network, especially as we get ready for the opening of the City Rail Link and the benefits that will bring to west Auckland’s train services later this year”, says Cara.

“The additional capacity and destinations these new services provide will also help ease the pressure on people’s wallets, considering the current situation with fuel prices. It’s also worth remembering that AT offers a $50 weekly cap on fares for buses, trains and inner-harbour ferries.”

These improvements are funded by Auckland Council’s Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR), which funds initiatives contributing to the goals of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Action Plan. This plan sets out Auckland’s path to net bus emissions by 2050 while also adapting to the impacts of climate change.
