Walking and driving

Overview

There is currently a gap in the footpath along Gills Road, between the angled parking near Pakuranga Domain and the existing footpath opposite 157 Gills Road. People walking in the area have no continuous, dedicated path to use.

At the Gills Road and Pigeon Mountain Road intersection, there is no formal crossing point. The road width makes it difficult for people on foot to cross safely.

To improve walking connections and intersection safety, we're proposing to:

  • build a new footpath along Gills Road, from the angled parking next to Pakuranga Domain to opposite 157 Gills Road
  • build a new pram crossing with refuge islands across Gills Road, including tactile pavers
  • optimise existing give way controls for vehicles turning left and right out of Gills Road onto Pigeon Mountain Road
  • realign kerbs along Gills Road to make space for the new footpath and crossing
  • build a new staircase opposite 191 Gills Road, connecting Gills Road to Pakuranga Domain
  • remove eight on-street parking spaces.

Project benefits

Footpath connection

Provides a continuous footpath along Gills Road, closing an existing gap between Pakuranga Domain and the footpath opposite 157 Gills Road.

Safer crossings

Gives people a safe, formal place to cross Gills Road at the Pigeon Mountain Road intersection, where no formal crossing currently exists.

Mobility access

Pram crossings and tactile pavers make the new crossing accessible for people with prams, wheelchairs, and those with limited vision.

Domain access

A new staircase opposite 191 Gills Road provides a direct connection between Gills Road and Pakuranga Domain.
