Walking, driving, bus, train and cyclingOverview
Hopetoun Street currently has no formal pedestrian crossings between Ponsonby Road and Pitt Street, despite high levels of pedestrian activity and increasing traffic demand.
With the City Rail Link nearing completion, this intersection is expected to experience a significant increase in foot traffic, vehicle movements, servicing activity, and pick-up and drop-off trips—particularly as it becomes the primary access point for Karanga-a-Hape Station.
These changes are intended to:
- improve safety for people crossing Hopetoun Street and Beresford Square
- manage traffic more efficiently as demand increases
- future-proof the intersection for long-term growth in the city centre.
What we’re planning to do
Subject to final approvals, we’re planning to signalise the Hopetoun Street and Beresford Square intersection, including:
- installing new traffic signals to safely manage vehicle movements
- providing signalised pedestrian crossings on all approaches
- improving conditions for cyclists and general traffic through clearer traffic operations
- supporting safe and efficient pick-up and drop-off activity near Karanga-a-Hape Station.
