Overview

We’re making changes to Randwick Park. We've prioritised these changes because:

  • residents have raised safety concerns
  • there have been 71 crashes over a 5-year period, including 1 fatal crash
  • high driving speeds well above the speed limit were recorded on Hyperion Drive, Magic Way, Riverton Drive and Shifnal Drive
  • there are community spaces nearby, including schools, shops, parks and a community centre.

Together, these factors show the need to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for everyone.

What the feedback said

In November 2025 we asked for feedback on our speed calming initiative in Randwick Park.

Consultation was open from 24 November to 31 December 2025. This included:

  • an information evening on 24 November
  • a drop-in session on 6 December
  • discussions with the schools in the area
  • 502 individuals visited the project webpage
  • 38 submissions were received.

People told us:

  • safety improvements were needed
  • speed humps would be preferred over speed cushions.

We have used this feedback to make some changes to our original plans. You can see all of those changes on the map.

Read the full Randwick Park speed calming initiative engagement report to see all the feedback.

What happens next

We're planning for construction to start by June 2026.

We'll be in touch before any changes take place.

This project is supported by Manurewa Local Board and partially funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund and is part of the Residential Speed Management Programme.

Latest updates

After listening to all the community feedback, we are making some changes to the original proposal.

The original proposal included a total of 23 devices:

  • 18 speed cushions
  • 5 speed cushions with pedestrian island crossings.

After community feedback, we have changed this to:

  • 22 speed humps
  • 4 speed humps with pedestrian island crossings
  • 1 zebra crossing with speed humps
  • 2 pedestrian island crossings.
Where these changes will happen

Riverton Drive: We'll put a new zebra crossing outside the shops to provide full pedestrian priority. Previously this was proposed to be a pedestrian island.

Randwick Park School:

  • Magic Way: Upgrade the existing Kea school crossing to a zebra crossing, giving pedestrians priority at all times.
  • Riverton Drive: Install “stayput” signs at the school crossing.
  • Nearco Street and Riverton Drive: Upgrade the pedestrian island crossing at the intersection.

Magic Way: A new pedestrian island crossing outside the park, with an extra speed hump on the approach to the new crossing.

Shifnal Drive:

  • New kerb ramps at the road narrowing outside number 17 and number 22.
  • An extra speed hump outside the playground.

Trimdon Street:

  • Move the speed hump from outside number 62 to number 70.
  • Install one additional speed hump on the loop road outside number 17A and number 22.

Foxlaw Street:

  • Move the speed hump from outside number 14 to number 8.
  • Install one extra speed hump near the bend outside number 38 and number 23.

New no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) for improved visibility and access at:

  • Hyperion Drive and Porchester Road intersection
  • Skelton Avenue, Magic Way and Villino Place roundabout
  • Riverton Drive, Magic Way and Foxlaw Street roundabout.

All other roads will have the speed calming measures as proposed in the consultation.
