Walking and drivingOverview
Before June 2027, we will:
- install traffic lights and new pedestrian crossings on the west leg of Shirley Road and Dreadon Avenue
- rebuild the footpath and grass berm where necessary
- improve the road surface, signs, and road markings as needed
- install broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to support these safety improvements.
We will need to remove 12 parking spaces from the surrounding area. This includes:
- 6 parking spaces outside 242 to 254 Shirley Road
- 3 parking spaces outside 273 to 275 Shirley Road
- 2 parking spaces outside 269 Shirley Road on Dreadon Avenue
- 1 parking space outside 273 Shirley Road on Dreadon Avenue.

Project background
This project aims to improve safety at the Shirley Road and Dreadon Avenue intersection. Auckland Transport has identified it as a high-risk location under our high-risk intersections programme. This is due to its poor crash history involving turning movements from Dreadon Avenue to Shirley Road. The intersection lacks pedestrian crossing facilities. We expect the proposal to make crashes much less likely at the intersection and enhance the safety for all road users.
This intersection is the 11th riskiest intersection in the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board area. Between 2019 and 2023, there were 13 crashes reported here. In 6 of those crashes, people were injured. Most of these crashes involved drivers entering or exiting Dreadon Avenue and not giving way to traffic on Shirley Road. Between 2024 and 2025, 3 more crashes happened which followed the same pattern. In one of those crashes, people were injured.
