Project details

Start date

2019

End date

Ongoing

Location

East Coast Road and Glenvar Road

Transport involved

Cycling, bus, driving and walking

Overview

This section of corridor includes:

  • East Coast Road (about 1km between Oteha Valley Road and Lonely Track Road
  • Glenvar Road (about 2.1km between East Coast Road and Ian Sage Avenue).

This project focuses on improving safety, reducing congestion and providing better travel options for all road users.

We requested community feedback on proposed designs in December 2019. To read the feedback and our responses, download the public feedback report (PDF, 3.8MB).

We’ve developed the improvements based on assessments of what will provide the greatest benefit to the growing community. Since the first consultation, the designs were developed up to 70% completion. After the Auckland Anniversary floods in 2023, we paused the project so we could repair slips on Glenvar Road (opens in a new tab).

Latest updates

We’ve restarted the detailed designs process for the Glenvar Road and East Coast Road corridor improvements. We’re looking to complete detailed designs in 2026 and prepare the project for construction.

While we are still planning, we want to set expectations with the community and share the designs that we have up to date.

East Coast Road will be our first priority. If there is enough budget, we will do the whole project at the same time. Since the remedial works on Glenvar Road, our designs will need further changes to include those new road layouts.

Our project scope on East Coast Road is from 950 East Coast Road up to 1050 East Coast Road. On Glenvar Road, our scope is from 981 East Coast Road to 14 Ashley Avenue. This includes:

  • Glenvar Road, East Coast Road and Lonely Track Road intersection upgrades
  • East Coast Road and Glamorgan Drive intersection
  • footpath improvements along East Coast Road, including the intersections
  • transit lanes to improve congestion through the corridor
  • cycle lanes and shared paths in certain areas along the route
  • other safety improvements such as crossings on both East Coast Road and Glenvar Road.
Our key next steps

We will:

  • complete the detailed design for the project and incorporate the remedial works on Glenvar Road completed in October 2023
  • internal reviews and audits of the design
  • share the current designs for the project (with certain areas still under review) to keep the community informed on the project and outline changes
  • contact neighbouring landowners about the project, changes to residential access, temporary occupation required during construction and to share disruption details expected with the community
  • apply for and get consents
  • finalise designs, tender the work contract and appoint a contractor to continue planning for construction
  • keep the community informed about plans as they take place.

We thank you for your patience and support to deliver these improvements.

Timeline

Project update 2021

Completed
July 2021

We analysed all the public feedback. We updated and completed our business case for initial funding from the Regional Land Transport Plan for the Glenvar Road improvements.

We submitted the business plan to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to request funding so we can proceed to the detailed design stage of the project.

Glenvar Road flood recovery 2023

Completed
Early 2023

Severe weather events on Auckland Anniversary Weekend resulted in a significant slip-on Glenvar Road. The repairs were completed in Oct 2023, with the project paused until funding was reallocated to complete the designs. A section of the design (between East Coast Road and Fitzwilliam Drive) will require incorporation of the remedial works completed in October 2023.

The AT Board approved AT’s Capital Investment Programme FY23/24, which resulted in pausing some capital projects, including this project. Learn more about the AT Capital Investment Programme FY23/24.

Project benefits

Safe and resilient access

These corridor improvements will make the road safer and more reliable for motorists, and support growth in Long Bay.

Improved multi-modal transport choices

New vehicle lanes, safer crossings, upgraded footpaths and cycleways will make it easier and safer to travel by bus, bike, foot or car.

Better links and environmental outcomes

The project improves access to homes, schools and shops. It supports local business, and encourages more sustainable travel choices that reduce emissions.

Project background

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the proposed improvements. We received 420 submissions which we read and analysed. You can read detailed information on the feedback received and our responses to the issues raised in the public feedback report.
