Walking, driving and cyclingOverview
We heard concerns from Somerville Intermediate School about the safety of tamariki and the community.
More people are crossing the road during school pick up times. Traffic can make it hard to do school patrols safely. We’ll upgrade the crossing to a signalised pedestrian crossing so drivers stop safely.
Improvements
We plan to:
- replace the crossing with a new signalised pedestrian crossing about 30m down the road
- install high friction surfacing to help drivers stop safely
- remove broken yellow lines near the old crossing
- add new broken yellow lines at the corner of Alicia Road and Meadowland Drive
- install pram crossings and tactile paving to support people using prams or mobility aids
- widen the footpath on both sides of the new crossing.
Parking changes
We will:
- remove around 2 parking spaces at the Alicia Road corner
- remove 2 spaces outside 32 Meadowland Drive
- add 6 spaces on Meadowland Drive
- add some spaces back along the street.
Overall, there will be no loss of parking spaces.

Construction timing will be confirmed. We’ll let the community know before work starts so there are no surprises.

Project background
This crossing is heavily used, especially during school pick up times. Upgrading it to a signalised crossing will make it safer for people to cross and clearer for drivers when they need to stop.
