When you sell or buy a jetski or personal watercraft, you'll need to get the registration transferred to the new owner.
The transfer of registration is a requirement under the Auckland Council Navigation Safety Bylaw. You must start the transfer of registration process within 30 days of selling the vessel.
There is no cost for transferring the registration of a jetski or personal watercraft that has already been registered.
If you have sold your jetski or personal watercraft, you'll need to request a transfer of registration.
Step 1: Log in to your MyAT account
Step 2: Provide new owner's contact details
Find the registration details for the vessel you have sold and start the transfer registration process.
You'll need to provide us with the new owner's:
- Mobile number.
- Email address.
- Postal address.
Step 3: New owner accepts the transfer
We'll email the new owner and they will complete the transfer of registration process.
We'll email you to let you know when the registration is complete.
If the new owner doesn't complete the transfer
If possible, contact the new owner to ask them to complete the registration.
Auckland Transport will email the new owner twice in 30 days and will also write to them at the postal address provided.
The registration of the personal watercraft will stay in your name until the new owner completes the registration process. The operator of the vessel will be held responsible for any behaviour or failure to comply with local bylaws.
No contact details for buyer
If the new owner is not known, or you don’t have their contact details, contact the Harbourmaster at email@example.com.
If you receive an email, letter, or phone call about a pending transfer of registration, you'll need to complete a few steps to get the registration transferred over to you. Please complete the transfer of registration within 5 working days.
Step 1: Make sure you have a MyAT account
If you haven't already, register for MyAT.
Step 2: Confirm the details of your jetski or personal watercraft
Using the unique link sent to your email address, log in to MyAT and you'll be able to access the transfer request.
Confirm these details:
- Hull Identification Number.
- CC rating.
- Date of purchase.
- Year of manufacture.
- Trailer licence plate (optional).
Step 3: Transfer complete
We'll email you and the seller to confirm that the registration has been transferred. You can view your jetski registration details in MyAT.
Vessel is unregistered or registered outside Auckland
If you buy an unregistered jetski or personal watercraft, you'll need to register it.
If your vessel is already registered in Northland, you'll need to ensure that the registration is transferred to the new owner. The seller needs to initiate a transfer of registration via myAT or you can contact the Harbourmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 09 362 0397.
If your vessel is already registered in Waikato (including Taupo), the seller will need to transfer the registration held by the Waikato Regional Council. Find out how to contact the Waikato Regional Council about jetski registrations.
You can use vessels in Auckland that have been registered in Northland, Auckland, or Waikato.
Vessels registered in Auckland start with the number 1 and Waikato start with the number 9.
