As kaiako (educators), you play a vital role in shaping the future of our society. This programme will help you give your ākonga (students) knowledge and skills that will benefit both them and their communities.

This unit of 6 lessons addresses critical issues facing our communities today. These issues include climate change, road safety, and sustainable transport.

By teaching this unit, you will:

  • raise awareness about climate change and its impacts
  • promote safe and responsible travel habits
  • encourage healthy, active and sustainable transport choices
  • foster independence and decision-making skills.

What's included

There are 6 online, interactive lessons, each with:

  • a lesson plan
  • interactive student activities
  • extra activities for knowledge reinforcement and extension.

The programme also includes:

  • a teacher guide
  • a curriculum link overview page
  • links to videos supporting the lessons
  • a teacher assessment rubric based on the level of understanding of key lesson content and student engagement
  • a student assessment rubric based on lesson activities, student participation and post-lesson Kahoot quizzes
  • a parent and whanau letter introducing the programme on the website to inform and engage parents and caregivers
  • a glossary.

Lesson 1 — What is climate change?

Learning intention (WALT)

Identify what climate change is and why the climate is changing.

Success criteria

I can:

  • explain what climate change is
  • describe the greenhouse effect
  • identify the role of fossil fuels in climate change.

Lesson 2 — How is climate change affecting the world?

Learning intention (WALT)

Identify some key impacts of climate change on the world.

Success criteria

I can:

  • read graphs that show how Earth’s temperature is increasing
  • examine Earth’s polar regions and describe the changes I see
  • explain the impacts of climate change on people, animals and places.

Lesson 3 — How big is your carbon footprint?

Learning intention (WALT)

Understand the personal impact an individual can have on climate change.

Success criteria

I can:

  • explain what a carbon footprint is
  • use mathematics to estimate the carbon dioxide emissions from a car journey to school
  • explain why reducing carbon dioxide emissions is so important.

Lesson 4 — Safe active journeys

Learning intention (WALT)

Identify road safety rules for pedestrians, bikes and scooters and their importance.

Success criteria

I can:

  • explain why we have road safety rules to follow
  • identify key road safety rules for pedestrians, riding a scooter and cycling
  • explain how manaakitanga (respect) applies to myself and others while travelling.

Lesson 5 — Using public transport

Learning intention (WALT)

Recognise actions that are polite and safe when using public transport.

Success criteria

I can:

  • identify the steps needed for making a journey using public transport
  • identify how I should behave and make safe choices when using public transport
  • explain how manaakitanga (respect) applies to myself and others while using public transport.

Lesson 6 — Getting around Auckland

Learning intention (WALT)

Plan journeys using Journey Planner.

Success criteria

I can:

  • plan a journey to school using public transport, walking or cycling
  • plan a journey using a bus, train and ferry
  • use Journey Planner to plan a journey to places across Auckland.
