Latest updates

Once construction begins, we will post regular updates on this page.

If you have any questions, email levelcrossings@at.govt.nz

Status

In spring, we will begin building improvements to the area around the station and Park and Ride. The 2 pedestrian level crossings will stay open until late December.

If you plan on using Homai Station while we carry out this work, you should allow extra time to get to the station. We will put in place temporary footpath detours and other safety measures.

We will install signs to keep you informed and help you find your way during construction.

Background

There are 2 crossings at Homai Station. Both crossings are not controlled by automatic safety gates.

The crossings are by:

  • the Blind and Low Vision Campus
  • Manurewa High School.

The alternative route is via the stairs connecting Homai Station to Browns Road.

Community engagement

In November 2023, we asked residents about removing Homai Station's pedestrian level crossings.

We wanted to know how we could make the alternative route safer before we removed the level crossing.

We did not ask about the removal itself because of the safety regulations we must follow.

Recommended improvements

In response to community feedback, we will:

  • build a new ramp to replace the stairs between Browns Road and Homai Station so there is a safer and more accessible connection
  • replace footpaths damaged by tree roots on McVilly Road
  • improve footpaths around the Park and Ride
  • make the footpaths between the bus stop and Browns Road more direct.

We will also widen footpaths surrounding the station to 1.8m, including those:

  • on Browns Road and McVilly Road
  • leading to the Park and Ride and the bus stop.

For more details, download the Homai Station engagement summary and decisions report (PDF, 638KB).

Timing

Works to install the alternative route improvements will begin in spring 2024. They will end in late 2024 or early 2025.

We will remove the level crossing after the alternative route improvements are done.

We will confirm the exact date for removing the level crossing closer to the time.
