Winter school holidays rail upgrades

The next planned rail closure will be from Saturday 28 June to Sunday 13 July. Parts of the Southern Line will be closed for drainage work. There will be reduced frequency on the rest of the Southern Line, the Eastern Line, and the Western Line. Trains on the Onehunga Line will still run every 30-minutes throughout the day.

Closing parts of the Southern Line will allow KiwiRail to perform more intensive maintenance works, with platforms closed at Te Mahia, Homai and Takanini stations.

Other work happening across the network includes:

  • cable and fibre installations
  • signalling upgrades
  • level crossing investigation work
  • ongoing construction of the new Drury stations.

KiwiRail will continue to upgrade drainage around Henderson Station in west Auckland as AT replaces the old lifts and escalators in the station. There will be a reduced frequency of trains on the Western Line to allow the work, which is deep drainage works close to rail lines due to the depth and proximity of the drainage works to rail lines.

Trains in both directions will use one track between Swanson and Henderson during the school holidays. This 'single line running' period allows KiwiRail to undertake work on one set of rails while trains run on the other set.

Getting around while lines are closed

During the winter rail upgrades, rail replacement buses will be available between Puhinui and Pukekohe including an express bus service.

Details on the rail replacement bus schedules can be viewed on the Alternative transport during the Rail Network Rebuild page.
