How tickets are served

A parking ticket may be attached to the vehicle, handed to the driver or sent by post. All other types of tickets will be sent by post. This is in accordance with relevant legislation including the Land Transport Act 1998, the Maritime Transport Act 1994 and the Summary Proceedings Act 1957.

A ticket sent by post should arrive 5 to 15 working days after the date of the offence.

You can use the infringement number on your ticket to view images of all vehicle-related offences and most Harbourmaster offences. This is helpful to:

  • confirm it is your vehicle
  • see what you did wrong.

You have 28 days to act

From the date your ticket is served, you have 28 days to act. Your options are printed on the back of your ticket and include:

  • paying your fine
  • transferring your ticket to someone else, if applicable
  • disputing your infringement
  • requesting a court hearing.

We offer a range of methods to pay online, or you can visit an NZ Post shop to pay in person.

You can also use Zip or Afterpay to pay off your fine in instalments. Auckland Transport (AT) does not offer any other payment plans except Zip and Afterpay.

See payment options.

In some circumstances, you can ask for a vehicle ticket to be transferred to someone else. This could be if you sold the car or it was stolen prior to the offence.

This can take up to 15 working days to process. We’ll confirm the outcome with you.

If you think there’s been a mistake, you can dispute your ticket. You will need to provide supporting evidence.

This process can take up to 15 working days. Your due date for payment will not be put on hold while this happens.

AT will consider the information you provide and will either cancel your ticket or notify you that enforcement will continue. If enforcement continues, you can choose to either pay your fine or request a court hearing. Your original payment due date will still apply.

There are two types of court hearing requests. One is if you deny liability – you believe you did nothing wrong. The other is for financial hardship – you can’t afford to pay and want the court to decide the fine.

This can take several months to complete. If you do not admit liability, you will need to appear in court. Court costs will be added if you plead guilty or are found guilty.

If you do not pay or request a court hearing before your due date, you'll be sent a reminder notice. This gives you another 28 days to take action.

If you still do not pay or request a court hearing before the final date for payment, AT may refer the matter to Baycorp. Baycorp will contact you to arrange payment, which can include paying it off in instalments.

Unpaid vehicle fines are sent to Baycorp

If no action is taken within 28 days of the reminder notice being sent, AT may refer details of your unpaid vehicle fine to Baycorp (a collection agency).

Baycorp may let you pay your fee off over time. They will not charge any extra fees.

Once the infringement has been referred to Baycorp, all payment arrangements should be done through them.

For more information, visit the Baycorp website.

Fines that remain unpaid are sent to the Ministry of Justice

If you do not pay your fine or request a court hearing, your matter will be sent to the Ministry of Justice and become a court fine.

Court fees will be added, and there are serious consequences for non-payment of court fines.

Visit the Ministry of Justice website to find out more.

Important things to note

We do not issue GST receipts because fines do not incur GST.

You paid already but were sent a reminder notice

If you receive a reminder notice about a ticket that has been paid, check the date it was sent. It could have been posted before you completed payment, in which case you can disregard it.

Once a ticket has been paid, it will no longer be available on our website.
