How to top up an AT HOP card Te ara hei uta moni ki tō kāri AT HOP
You need to top up your AT HOP card before you can travel with it. You can do this online or in person.
Top up online
You can top up your AT HOP card online in MyAT. You will need:
- a registered AT HOP card
- a credit or debit card.
You’ll be able to use your top-up one hour after you pay. Our system needs this time to share your top-up with our AT HOP readers. If you need to travel right away, top up in person.
How to top up online (3 steps)
Go to MyAT
Log into MyAT and:
- go to ‘AT HOP’
- select ’Top up online’
- select the registered AT HOP card you want to top up.
Pay for the top-up
You will need to:
- select or enter a top-up amount
- enter your payment details.
Activate the top-up
You can activate it one hour after payment by tagging on at an AT HOP reader or electronic gate.
You need to tag on within 60 days or the transaction will be cancelled and your payment refunded. Your top-up will show as pending until then.
Auto top-ups
To always have money on your AT HOP card, set up an auto top-up.
How auto top-up works
In MyAT, select an AT HOP card and set:
- a minimum balance
- a top-up amount.
When your card balance falls below your selected minimum, it will top up by the amount you’ve selected. We’ll send you an email confirmation.
You can use auto top-up money immediately – you do not need to wait one hour.
You can set up auto top-ups online in MyAT. You will need a registered AT HOP card.
You can pay with a credit card, debit card or bank account (ANZ, ASB, BNZ, KiwiBank, TSB or Westpac only).
How to set an auto top-up (3 steps)
Enter details
You will need to select:
- the registered AT HOP card you want to top up
- a top-up amount
- a minimum balance – when your balance gets to this level, the card will top up automatically
- an end date, or switch off the ‘Set an end date’ toggle
- a payment method then enter your payment details.
Tag on to activate
Tag on at an AT HOP reader or electronic gate within 60 days.
If you do not tag on within 60 days, the transaction will be cancelled and your payment refunded. Your top-up will show as pending until then.
How to edit your auto top-up
- Log into your MyAT account and go to AT HOP.
- Select ‘Set up auto top-up’.
- Select the card you want to change, then ‘Edit auto top-up’.
- Set a minimum balance and a top-up amount.
- Set an end date and confirm your payment details.
If you do not want an end date for your auto top-up, switch off the ‘Set an end date’ toggle.
How to cancel your auto top-up
- Log into your MyAT account.
- Select the card you want to change.
- Select ‘My products’ then select ‘Cancel’ next to your auto top-up.
Failed payments
If your auto top-up payment doesn’t go through, we will try 2 more times to collect the payment. We’ll send you an email each time.
After the third failed attempt, the auto top-up will be cancelled.
If your AT HOP card has a negative balance, you will not be able to use it until it has been topped up.
Manage your payment details
If you’re using a credit card, debit card or bank account, you can edit your payment details in MyAT.
- Log into your MyAT account and go to AT HOP.
- Select ‘AT HOP cards’, then the card you want to change.
- Go to the ‘My products’ tab then select ‘Edit’.
- Select ‘Use a different card’ or ‘Use a bank account’, then ‘Confirm’.
You will be directed to our secure payment portal to enter your new payment details.
Monthly ferry pass
Get unlimited ferry travel in one calendar month.
AT HOP card expiry
AT HOP cards expire if you don’t use them for 6 years. Uses include:
- paying for transport
- requesting refunds
- loading AT HOP money or monthly ferry passes on it.
If the card expires, you can transfer its balance to another AT HOP card in the same AT HOP profile. If you do not transfer its balance to another card, any leftover money or products (such as concessions) go to Auckland Transport.
All AT HOP cards expire 10 years after they are bought. We will replace your expired AT HOP card for free.
