Electronic ticketing gates Electronic ticketing gates

Auckland Transport (AT) is installing electronic gates at a number of train stations across Auckland.

Project status: Implementation
Project zone: City-wide

Project overview

In an effort to improve the rail travel experience, AT is working in partnership with Transdev, and KiwiRail to install new electronic ticket gates for rail service customer at these stations: Papakura, and Middlemore stations.

The new ticketing gates are part of Auckland Transport’s Safety and Fare Enforcement (SaFE) project and are already in use at Waitematā Station (Britomart), Henderson, Newmarket, Manukau, Manurewa, Parnell, Papatoetoe and Ōtāhuhu stations.

SaFE is a joint commitment between AT and passenger rail operator, Transdev Auckland to deliver initiatives that will improve customer experience, increase security and safety, and reduce vandalism and fare evasion. The project also sees the phased introduction of Transport Officers.

Objectives

  • improve customer safety and security at the station platforms
  • minimise and control antisocial behaviour and criminal activities
  • create a safe and secure station environment
  • improve the customer experience and encourage the use of public transport
  • minimise fare evasion
  • reducing antisocial behaviour and associated criminal activities that could cause service disruptions.

Timeline

  • 8 August 2017 - gates live at Henderson Station
  • 15 August 2017 - gates live at Ōtāhuhu Station
  • 16 January 2018 - gates live at Manurewa Station
  • 26 July 2018 – gates live at Papatoetoe Station
  • 2 August 2019 – gates live at Parnell Station
  • 23 Oct 2019 – Papakura Station (under construction)
  • April 2020 – Proposed gate live at Papakura Station
  • February 2021 – Indicative gate live at Middlemore Station.

How the gates work

The electronic gates are activated automatically with the use of your AT HOP card. If customers have a paper ticket, station staff will activate the gates. There is also a gate line if you have not yet paid the fare for your journey.

The gate lines will be manned while the stations are open.

Making it easier to travel

The use of AT HOP cards makes bus and train journeys simpler, with a single fare being charged for each journey, even if customers take several buses or trains to get to their destination. This means customers pay for the entire journey from A to B, instead of paying for each bus or train separately.

When tag on and off each bus and train at the end of a journey, customers will be charged a single fare.

During the journey, our customers can use up to 5 buses or trains within 4 hours, with up to 30 minutes transfer time between each trip and still will be charged a single fare.
