Great North Road, Western Springs – Midblock crossing Great North Road, Western Springs – Midblock crossing
In 2020, Albert-Eden (previously Waitematā) Local Board and Auckland Transport invited community feedback on our proposal to improve pedestrian safety on Great North Road (outside Western Springs Lakeside Park).
On behalf of Albert-Eden Local Board, we will carry out improvements to support high pedestrian demand and improve safety.
Between November and December, we will:
- install a traffic-light controlled crossing near the footpath to Western Springs Lakeside Park
- install new footpaths and yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help people find their way to crossings and safely cross the road
- trim the nearby trees on the east side of Great North Road to ensure the traffic signals are visible to approaching drivers
- install new signage and paint new road markings to support the changes.
For more information about these improvements, download the proposal drawing for Great North Road (PDF, 1.8MB).
How this will benefit your neighbourhood
The traffic light-controlled crossing will help manage traffic on this busy road. It will provide better visibility to drivers on the approach.
It will provide a safe crossing location for pedestrians to access Western Springs, MOTAT and Auckland Zoo. These organisations have been key advocates for pedestrian improvements.
The crossing will slow drivers to a safer speed around the crossing point.
There will be a low impact on traffic flow. It will only activate when someone needs to cross and pushes the button.
These changes are part of a bigger transport plan
Auckland Transport, local boards and ward councillors are working together to prioritise and address local road safety concerns.
Local Board Transport Capital Fund Programme is funding this project. This programme uses funding within Auckland Transport’s annual budget to deliver on Local Board initiatives for local areas and communities.
