Proposal update

In June 2020 we invited community feedback on our proposal to upgrade the pedestrian crossing to a raised zebra crossing at 190 Tripoli Road in Point England. This location has been identified through Road Safety investigations and it is expected that the raised zebra crossing will improve road safety for people walking in the area by slowing approaching traffic and prioritising pedestrians.

We are writing to let you know about delays to the construction timeframe of this project.

Changes to the construction timeframe

We advised you in April 2021 that these works were scheduled to be constructed by May 2021. During that time period we faced some issues in the detailed design stage of the project that have now been addressed, and the construction of this project can now proceed.

What happens next

This project now has a construction target of the 2021/22 financial year. We’ll write to you again next year with more detail about the commencement of works.

In June 2020, we proposed changes in your area

To improve safety for people walking in the area, we proposed to upgrade the pedestrian crossing to a raised zebra crossing at 190 Tripoli Road in Point England. This location was identified through road safety investigations and it is expected that the raised zebra crossing will improve pedestrian safety by slowing approaching traffic and prioritising pedestrians.

Changes proposed on Tripoli Road

  • Upgrade the pedestrian crossing to a raised zebra crossing. This crossing will be raised to a platform level with the footpath and is expected to improve safety, especially for the school children accessing the primary school, by slowing high traffic speeds on the approach to the crossing
  • Install new road markings and signage to make sure the crossings can be clearly seen by approaching drivers
  • Install pedestrian islands that will make it safer for people walking by reducing the crossing distance
  • Install tactile pavers to assist visually impaired pedestrians using the crossing and reconstruct part of the footpath to improve access onto the crossing
  • Add broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to improve the view from the intersection of Waddell Street. This involves removing 2 car parking spaces.

Changes proposed on Waddell Avenue

  • Reconstruct the footpath, install kerb ramps and tactile pavers to improve access onto the crossing
  • Install pedestrian islands that will make it safer for people walking by reducing the crossing distance
  • Install signage to make drivers aware of the upcoming crossings
  • Extend the broken yellow lines to make sure that parked cars do not block the view of the crossing and pedestrians
  • Remove the tree pits to allow for an improved view of the crossing and increase access in and out of Waddell Avenue
  • This proposal is part of a region wide pedestrian improvement programme which aims to improve safety at pedestrian crossings in high-risk locations. Read more about this programme.

This project is supported by the regional fuel tax fund.

Point England: Safe with us

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).

Proposal update

In August 2020 we advised you that COVID-19 had impacted our funding and we were not able to estimate a construction date. Funding has now been secured for this project and construction is now planned to begin by the end of May 2021.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our proposal and gave us the chance to better understand your community and concerns.

Next steps

Contractors will issue 48-hour notices to all affected residents prior to construction work starting.

Community feedback

  • All respondents supported this proposal stating that it would slow down vehicles and improve safety in the neighbourhood. As a result of the feedback received, a stay-put sign for the school patrol will be added in at the detailed design stage.

Next steps

We will be in touch with you when we know more about how this project will be impacted by the current budget constraints.

Once funding is secured, our contractors will send notices to affected residents 48-hours prior to construction starting.
