Why the changes were needed

These changes were needed to improve opportunities to use car sharing as an alternative mode of transport, allowing car share users easy access to inner-city facilities. Currently there are no shared parking spaces in the area.

Proposal outcome

This project will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback.

Feedback received

This proposal received positive responses from community members and stakeholders who supported installing a shared parking space on Union Street, Auckland Central.

A summary of this feedback and answers to community questions and concerns:

  • Requests for more car share parking. We propose shared parking spaces in collaboration with car share providers and new spaces are continually being considered.
  • Request for more loading zones, bicycle parking in the area. Due to the limited on-street parking available it is not possible for us to meet all the requests we receive for parking changes. We seek to provide a network of different restrictions to meet the widest possible range of customers. There are several existing Loading Zones on Union Street and Drake Street.
  • Concern that this parking is being moved as a result of another project. While the cycle lane project is moving this parking, it is moving it by 3.5m to create the necessary space rather than removing it. There will need to be alignment between the two projects.

Next steps

This work will happen between November 2019 and May 2020, but we will let you know if there are further changes or delays.

Our contractors will send notices to affected residents 48-hours prior to construction starting.
