About this project

The Konini School Safer Streets – Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau funded project looks to create a more connected and safer community for tamariki and local people by making active mode and congestion reducing alternatives more attractive and accessible. It will do so through a community-centric design that prioritises the customer experience and community needs.

Specifically, the project aims to accomplish:

  • Understand motivations & concerns of the parents and community to reduce the number of cars travelling around the neighbourhood at peak times and shift kids to active modes
  • To update safety perceptions around active mode use and behaviours (residents, parents & kids)
  • Build trust and a productive working relationship with the school and local community
  • Engage and collaborate with the local stakeholders to produce a solution that fits their community
  • Kids having more freedom of choice on how they would like to get to school safely

The project was proposed by the Waitakere Rangers Local Board and funded through the new Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau - The Vibrant Streets Programme.

Potential benefits of NTN Konini

Creating safer streets around Konini School could:

  • Increase the number of tamariki walking, cycling, and scootering to school
  • Increase the safety perception for parents and tamariki to encourage the use of local streets, walkways and to enjoy the experience of walking, cycling, and scootering to school
  • A reduction in the number of car trips to and from the school by the local and wider community and therefore less traffic at the school gate and a reduction in carbon emissions
  • Engage and collaborate with the local community/stakeholders to produce a solution for their community through the Co-Design process.

Our work so far

The following activities completed to date are part of the explore phase of this project.

  • Wheels Day
    To bring the local and school community together, the Auckland Transport Team put together an interactive outdoor co-design session with the aim of introducing this project to the community.
  • School gate sessions
    Two sessions were held at the front gate of Konini School with parents as they picked up their children to gather insight on what drives their travel choices and what could be implemented for them to consider other active mode options (cycling, walking, scootering, etc.).
  • Student workshops
    Two in-classroom workshops were held with a select number of students of different year groups to give them the opportunity to speak about how they would like to get to school and what could be implemented to help encourage alternative modes (walking, cycling, scootering, etc.) and make them feel safe.
  • Waitakere Local Board Workshop
    The project was re-introduced to the Local Board along with the findings from the engagements with the parents and students.
  • Teacher and staff workshop
    A session was held with teachers and non-teaching staff to gather their thoughts on issues, opportunities and how alternative modes of travel (walking, cycling, scootering, etc.) could be encouraged.

Co-exploring, co-designing, and co-delivering with you

The Konini School Safer Streets project will be delivered through a co-design model that relies on exploring, designing and delivering the agreed semi-permanent infrastructure or activities. It is expected that the Konini Primary Safer Streets project will aim to increase active mode travel for students to and from school and reduce traffic and congestion at the school gate.  

The project outputs will be co-designed and co-delivered with community stakeholders who will be able to shape the deliverables by: 

  • crafting the vision for Safer Streets around Konini School
  • providing input on the preferred timing and programming of activities
  • identifying any existing local infrastructure to which Safer Streets elements can add value  
  • generating interest and involvement in the project

The nature of the Nga Tiriti Ngangahau enables us to utilise a variety of options and can be semi–permanent, permanent or temporary infrastructure, as well as or supporting behaviour-based activities. There is also space to review and make changes as needed for a period until the best possible outcome is reached with the most success. We will document the trial and the processes and make this information available for other communities to use in the future. 

This project will take place across five stages:

Key Learnings so far

  • New road crossing facilities around the School to increase safe crossing opportunities.
  • Improvements to the Titirangi Badminton carpark to encourage people to use it and reduce congestion at other entry points.
  • Operational and safety Improvements to school entrances to encourage the use of all entry points and reduce congestion.
  • Wheels skills and safety training with students.
  • End of cycling journey facilities and secure storage onsite to encourage cycling/scooting to and from school.
  • Wayfinding, improvements to walking routes and increased Walking School Bus options to make it safer for children to travel to school independently from parents and free up parents' time. 
  • Incentives/activities encouraging walking, cycling, or scootering to school.
  • Re-design of pickup and drop off areas outside the school, to make it safer for children who walk and cycle to and from school.

The Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau - The Vibrant Streets Programme

Konini Safer Streets Project is part of Auckland Council’s Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau - The Vibrant Streets Programme.

Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau is aligned to Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan. The plan aims to reduce transport emissions by improving access to active modes (such as cycling or walking) and infrastructure. 

In the 2021 to 2031 10-year Budget, Auckland Council allocated $152 million of new spending on climate change initiatives over 10 years. 

Ngā Tiriti Ngangahau is a $3 million, 3-year programme covering 7 projects across Auckland. We are delivering this programme as part of this climate action package.
