Ponsonby Road and Pompallier Terrace Pedestrian Safety Improvements Ponsonby Road and Pompallier Terrace Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Proposal status: Construction

Page last updated: 9 January 2024

Auckland Transport (AT) in partnership with Ponsonby community representatives are working hard to make key changes to your neighbourhood. AT has been working alongside community representatives including elected members and the Ponsonby Business Association to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes throughout the development of the design. After consulting on our design proposal in November 2022, we are now looking to start construction soon.

Construction details

We are doing work to upgrade current zebra crossings on Ponsonby Road between Cowan Street and Pompallier Terrace. Our design is considered and based on a variety of factors including public feedback received during consultations, knowledge from experts in their field and improvements generated from findings of a Road Safety Audit.

Our improvements include:

  • Reducing the two left turning lanes to one, as a multi-lane approach to a zebra crossing is unsafe.
  • Upgrading the existing zebra crossing on Ponsonby Road immediately north of its intersection with Cowan Street to a raised zebra crossing, along with the eastern one at its intersection with Pompallier Terrace.
  • Raising the zebra crossings to be bus friendly, as Ponsonby Road is on a bus route.
  • Formalise the bus stop outside 281 Ponsonby Road.

Project updates

9 January 2024: AT is ready to commence construction, with the aim to complete works across 2 to 3 weekends in January 2024.

Project details

This project supports Tāmaki Makaurau’s commitment to Vision Zero, an ambitious transport safety vision, with the goal of no deaths or serious injuries on our transport system by 2050. This approach acknowledges that as people we all make mistakes, however a mistake should not mean someone dies or is seriously injured on our roads.

It’s also an approach that values everyone using the road, not just those in vehicles. It is about caring for more vulnerable road users like people walking or cycling, children and the elderly. Vision Zero is the international benchmark for transport safety.

Consultation

We consulted on this project in November 2022.
