Gills Road, Albany

Slip remediation works are underway on the lower portion of Gills Road where the downhill side of the road is continuing to subside.

April 2024

Unfortunately the site team have encountered hard ground material, slowing down their progress as they hit the home stretch. Two additional piles also had to be added to strengthen the area, and so taking into account this, the retaining wall itself is now likely to be complete around 25 April.

The team will then be installing a new guard rail to make this narrow, windy stretch of road safter and prevent run-off-road type crashes. The last bit of tidying up the site will also happen at this point including repairing the road seal and new road marking.

The target date to open the road is now 3 May – the team are working very hard to open sooner than this – please check back here for updates.

March 2024

Work has progressed well this month with all the large steel H beams for the piles now in place. The team at Fulton Hogan are now working on tying back the anchors that go under the road. Despite a few setbacks with the weather and poor ground conditions, it is on track to reopen in April with the next few weeks focused on finishing off the retaining wall, drainage and installing a guard rail.

February 2024

Trees and vegetation have been trimmed on the road heading to the bridge. There are a lot of services underground and overhead in this area that the team need to carefully work around - including some that are not on plans.  Steel H piles are being installed to support the slip area.

January 2024

Our contractor Fulton Hogan has begun repair works on the lower section of Gills Road to mitigate further damage and ensure the road is fit for purpose in the future.

This site repair is significant and requires large piles and anchors to be installed to retain the embankment (see similar works in the image below). We have closed this section of Gills Road to allow large machines to work safely within the limited work space available on this narrow section of road.

Works began on Monday 29 January and we expect them to continue until early April.

Time to complete: 10 weeks, weather dependent.

Access restrictions: No vehicles are allowed through the section where works are being undertaken. These restrictions will be in place 24 hours a day. Pedestrians will continue to have access through the site.

  • There will be changes to your usual route driving down into Albany Village which will add to your journey time. To keep you and our team safe, please follow the instructions of the onsite traffic control team and plan ahead.
  • All heavy plant machinery and equipment will stay onsite during the works. As the road is very narrow in the section where the works are taking place, the machinery will occupy both lanes, necessitating the road closure.
  • This work involves machinery which can create noise, vibration and dust. All efforts will be made to minimise these disturbances as much as practically possible. Works will only be carried out during daylight hours, Monday to Friday, and some Saturdays if required.
  • To ensure the safety of you and your whānau, please keep young children and animals well supervised and away from the work area.

December 2023

Vector has carried out works to secure the leaning power pole and install a switch to divert power from the overhead lines. This piece of work was necessary to ensure the site is safe to undertake the slip repair works.

Hinemoa Terrace, Birkenhead

Road status: Closed, Access only for residents.

Repairs to a huge slip on Hinemoa Terrace began in early February and will take three months to complete.  Before the Fulton Hogan team could start, Vector, Chorus and Watercare needed to move their services.

In addition to the large slip face, the road has slumped along almost the entire length. The team has started the construction of the timber retaining wall at the end of the slumping and are working towards the main slip area.  Rock has been placed at the base of the slip where the ground condition is weak.

15 February 2024

Construction is progressing well with piling underway to support a retaining wall.

2 February 2024

  • Contractors are moving equipment to the site prior to starting construction work next week.
  • Due to the narrowness of Hinemoa Terrace, and large machinery required for the repairs, access to properties will be restricted at times.
  • All vehicles will need to park outside of the works area on Hinemoa Street.

  • Utility works in progress.

Marine Parade Reserve, Bayswater

Road status: Open.

Sir Peter Blake Parade, adjacent to Marine Parade, was damaged by a slip as a result of the storm events in early 2023. A new 30 metre timber retaining wall will be constructed next to the carpark access road.

March 2024

There has been good progress on the retaining wall to hold back the slip towards the main road.  Old steel railings and rock have been found during the excavations.

22 February 2024

Work is scheduled to begin next week to repair the slip, which is expected to take around five weeks.

  • Work will take place between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday, from 26 February 2024.
  • Marine Parade Reserve carpark will remain closed to pedestrians and vehicles for the duration of the works.
  • Access through Sir Peter Blake Parade will be narrowed during the works. AT contractors will use a mix of temporary
traffic management including a lower speed limit and shoulder closure, with stop/go at times.
  • Traffic controllers will help to manage pedestrian access. Please follow all signs and traffic directions.
  • On street parking will be limited while the works are undertaken.

December 2023

Work started in November on site #2 on Paremoremo Road.  A massive slip reduced the road to one lane in this location.  The scale of the slip can be seen in the image immediately below.  Fulton Hogan on behalf of Auckland Transport are installing a new 70m timber retaining wall.  This wall consists of 46 timber poles along with 40 12-metre long anchors.  The retaining wall is now finished and the team are working on the pavement and new footpath through December.

December 2023

Work started in October on Ridge Road to repair two major slips along the road. Great progress has been made installing two timber piled retaining walls. The team are now focused on stabilising the road area itself.  Two failed stormwater pipes will also be replaced before the final pavement is repaired prior to reopening.

In a very unique situation, the only way for a young neighbour Tyler Parker to get to his school bus each day is to walk through the construction site.  Every morning and every afternoon, our traffic controller on this site stops the works and escorts Tyler to and from home.
