West Auckland flood recovery progress West Auckland flood recovery progress
Extreme weather events in 2023 caused damage to roads throughout Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. On this page, you can stay up to date on the progress of repair works in your area.
West Auckland road updates
Not all sites are listed on this page, as some have already been repaired. Design work on others is still ongoing, and other roads will be added as we work through the programme. Works may be completed on some roads without being added to this page, depending on the scale of the work and the number of residents affected.
We ask for patience as we work to repair more than 2,000 sites across Auckland.

Huia Road – various sites
10 February 2026
There are multiple slip sites along Huia Road. We are looking for ways to keep one lane open on all sites while work is in progress. We will update the community before works start on any of these sites.
This month we expect to start work:
- at 634 Huia Road on 16 February 2026
- on Huia Road 100m past Kaitarakihi Road mid to late February.
Work started:
- at 370 Huia Road in November 2025
- at 1103 Huia Road in October 2025.
We are working to maintain one-lane access at each of these sites for traffic.
Kay Road, Waitākere
19 December 2025
Road status: closed, residents access from Waitākere Road end.
Work began on this slip repair on 25 August 2025.
The slip repair is complete. The road will remain closed into the first 2 months of 2026 while Watercare replace the watermain at that end of Kay Road.
Mountain Road
19 December 2025
We have completed 12 major repairs on Mountain Road. There are some maintenance works underway on vegetation and cleaning. We expect to open the road by 21 December 2025.
We have also been investigating the drainage system along this section of Mountain Road. A large amount of existing drainage was due for an upgrade. We’ve made great progress upgrading it. Much of the existing infrastructure was due for renewal. In 2026 there are a few more items to be addressed, but these will be done without full road closure.
Ngaio Road, Waima
19 December 2025
This repair is nearly complete and the road is open. In 2026 the team will be back to complete some finishing work on the bank below the retaining wall. This will be completed without full road closure.
Pōhutukawa Glade, Karekare
19 December 2025
The work on restoring Pōhutukawa Glade, Karekare will continue in January after the holiday period. There is a small amount of material to transport by truck to Waitipu Park. This will be done under traffic management, but without full road closure.
We look forward to restoring this park for public recreation.
10 September 2025
On 27 February 2025 the Wāitakere Ranges Local Board approved, in principle, moving slip material from Pōhutukawa Glade in Karekare to Waitipu Park near Te Henga.
Waitipu Park was once a quarry. It is now closed to the public, but the plans are underway to restore this as a park. This location offers an opportunity to keep the slip material within the area.
For more information read the:
The Waitākere Ranges are infected with Kauri Dieback disease, which kills kauri trees. Because there are kauri in the area, we must shift the material to a location approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). We have worked with Auckland Council and MPI to get the necessary approvals and consents.
We expect that most of the slip material will be removed. However, we will keep around 500 cubic metres in the glade and reshape it into a flat, useable public space. We will cover the leftover material with clay and topsoil so the area will be suitable for picnics or play. At Waitipu Park the relocated material to be shaped in the hillside, clay-capped, topsoiled and replanted. The plants will be natives sourced from a local nursery.
Fulton Hogan will start moving material from Pōhutukawa Glade in October 2025. During the removal of material, Karekare Road will be closed to all other traffic for safety reasons. Before we reopen Karekare Road, further road surface repairs will take place. We expect this work will take until November 2025.
Background
Following the early 2023 storm events, contractors removed tonnes of slip material from Auckland’s roads. Karekare was particularly hard-hit, with dozens of slips on the only 2 roads to the area. In Karekare, around 2,275 cubic metres of slip material retrieved from the 2 key roads into and out of Karekare was temporarily kept at Pōhutukawa Glade.
A long-term solution for the removal and deposit of the material elsewhere has been explored with:
- the Waitākere Ranges Local Board
- iwi
- Auckland Council (Regional Parks, Local Parks and Environmental Services)
- some representatives from within the Karekare community.
The desired outcome was to keep the material within the rohe (iwi boundary). We will achieve this by using Waitipu Park.
The solution needs to be able to accommodate kauri dieback disease (Phytophthora agathidicida). The disease is present throughout much of the Waitakere Ranges. Each of the major slips along Lone Kauri Road and Karekare Road occurred in areas known to contain kauri trees. Therefore, we assume the disease is present in the stockpile.
Multiple local disposal areas have been considered over the last 18 months.
Red Hills Road, Massey
10 February 2026
Work began in the week starting 10 November 2025 to repair the slip near 85 Red Hills Road, Massey.
We are using a mix of temporary traffic signs (like stop/go signs) and traffic lights, and a lower speed limit. Works are expected to be completed in March, weather dependent.
Tanekaha Road, Titirangi
10 February 2026
Work will start on the slip repair outside 28 Tanekaha Road on Tuesday 3 March 2026.
We need to build 3 retaining walls to repair the slip at this location.
Powerline and enablement works from 3 March to 10 March 2026
Vector will be working to put the powerlines underground at this location on Tuesday 3 March and Tuesday 10 March. On the days between these powerline works, our contractor will be preparing the slip site and trimming vegetation. The road will be open with stop/go during this phase.
Wall 1 – from 11 March 2026 for about 10 weeks
The first retaining wall will be built by building 39 piles steel and concrete 16m deep along the road edge. The wall will be capped with a concrete beam, that will double as a footpath at this location.
Due to the narrow width of the road, and the size of the machinery, this work can only be completed under full road closure.
Timetable for road closure
| Times | Access details |
| Monday to Friday, 8:30am | Road closed for works. On school days, the school bus will be able to go through in the morning before the road is closed. |
| 12pm to 12:30pm | Road open for resident access. |
| 12:30pm to 5:30pm | Road closed for works. On school days, the school bus will stop on Otitori Bay Road. Students will be escorted through the closed section on foot. |
| Weekends and overnight, 5:30pm to 8:30am | The road will be open. There will be one-lane access under traffic lights. |
| Emergency access | In the event of emergency, we will be able to open the road at short notice to allow emergency vehicles to pass through the site. |
Once we’ve done all work that requires a road closure, we will revert to the temporary traffic lights and have one lane open most of the time. We will update the community when changes occur.
We expect the works to take 4 to 6 months to complete.

Tasman View Road, Bethells Beach / Te Henga
6 November 2025
There are 2 underslips on Tasman View Road in Te Henga. We expect to start the physical repairs on 17 November 2025. It will take about 3 months.
During the workday, a full road closure will be in place. No vehicles will have access through. Residents will have secure parking off Bethells Road and will be able to be dropped off to their homes on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle).
If you live in this area and would like to be included in email updates, email atengagement@at.govt.nz.
Waitākere Road Bridge – underpass closed
The underpass is closed at the bridge at the intersection of Waitākere Road and Bethells Road.
We have installed extra crossing signs and hit sticks on the approach to Bethells Road from Waitākere Road (township end) to improve visibility and safety.
On 1 April 2023, the speed limit was lowered to 60km per hour near the intersection (between 190m north of Bethells Road and 220m south of Township Road).
We will be starting the repair works to rebuild the underpass and walkway under the bridge near the intersection of Bethells Road and Waitakere Road in January 2026.
The programme will take up to 6 weeks, weather dependent. We will update you as we get closer to the end. Although the team will be working as fast as they can, it is important the project is constructed with safety in mind before it is open to public use.
Once the underpass is built, there will also be some work in the stream to protect the walkway from scouring in future weather events.
Woodlands Park Road, Waima
10 February 2026
The slip is near 150 Woodlands Park Road, above the stream bed.
This work started in September. It has been programmed in the spring and summer to the location of the works in the stream bed. We expect works to be completed in March 2026. The road will remain open, one-lane, during works.
