We've proposed changes in your area
In February 2019, we proposed to introduce new broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) parking restrictions on Ridge Road, at the intersection with Nelson Street in Howick.
This proposal would involve the removal of approximately 3 parking spaces.

Why the changes are needed
These changes are needed to improve the safety of drivers turning right out of Nelson Street onto Ridge Road. Currently cars parking here can limit the visibility of traffic approaching from the north.
Proposal outcome
This project will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning. Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback. A summary of this feedback and answers to community questions and concerns is below.
Feedback received
- This proposal received positive responses from community members and stakeholders who supported improving road safety by increasing visibility for drivers waiting to turn out of Nelson Street onto Ridge Road.
- Several respondents raised concerns regarding the effect the proposal will have on visitors to the Medical Centre (108 Ridge Road), forcing them to park further away from the Medical Centre than currently permitted.
The purpose of this current proposal is to improve the safety of drivers turning right out of Nelson Street onto Ridge Road by removing parking and improving sightlines for drivers. We have minimised the proposed parking restrictions along the front of the medical centre to only what is necessary to ensure that drivers turning out of Nelson Street have an appropriate level of visibility. The installation of broken yellow lines outside the Medical centre at 108 Ridge Road will have the added benefit of improving safety for vehicles exiting the medical centre as they will have improved visibility of traffic travelling along Ridge Road and will therefore be able to judge the best time to pull out and turn left or right. There is a substantial amount of on-street parking available further along Ridge Road and there is a very short distance between the removed parking spaces and available on-street parking.
Ridge Road is an Arterial Road with heavy traffic volumes and it is important that drivers turning out of Nelson Street have sufficient visibility of approaching traffic. Time restricted parking would still affect visibility when these spaces are occupied and therefore is not an adequate solution. - Several requests were made to impose additional parking restrictions beyond the ones currently proposed, extending broken yellow lines to No. 75 Ridge Road, outside No.107 Ridge Road as well as from No. 110 to 106 Ridge Road.
The purpose of this current proposal is to improve the safety of vehicles at the Ridge Road/Nelson Street intersection. The proposed broken yellow lines are to provide adequate visibility and improved access for vehicles turning out of Nelson Street. However, the request for additional broken yellow lines further along Ridge Road will be investigated as a separate issue. - One respondent raised concerns that the proposal didn’t address any specific safety concerns in the area and was a waste of resources.
We have carefully considered the needs of motorists and would not undertake a project such as this one without good reasons. Ridge Road is an Arterial Road with heavy traffic volumes and it is important that drivers turning out of Nelson Street have sufficient visibility of approaching traffic.
Next steps
We estimate that this work will be undertaken by October 2019, but we will let you know if there are further changes or delays. Our contractors will send notices to affected residents 48-hours prior to construction starting.
