Weed spraying

Auckland Transport (AT) is responsible for weed spraying in Auckland areas. We have listed below current notices of intention to spray as well as information on how to join the No Spray Register.

West Auckland

Notice of intention to undertake vegetation control 

For the month of April and weather permitting, AT contractors Fulton Hogan will carry out vegetation control activities using approved herbicides and mechanical/noxious weed control measures in Avondale, New Windsor, Blockhouse Bay in the Whau ward and also on streets in the Western Road Corridor. This area covers local board areas for Whau, Waitakere and Henderson-Massey wards. 

Programmed work locations may include: Waitakere Township, West Harbour, Massey Te Atatu Peninsula, Te Atatu South, Lincoln, Ranui, Swanson, Henderson, Henderson Valley, Western Heights, McLaren Park, Glendene, Sunnyvale, Anawhata, Te Henga/Bethells, Karekare, Piha, Waiatarua, Oratia, Glen Eden, Konini, Titirangi, Waima, French Bay, Wood Bay, Laingholm, Woodlands Park, Parau, Whatipu, Huia, Cornwallis, Green Bay, Kelston and New Lynn.

Operational areas are inclusive of footpaths, street-to-street walkways, bus stops, kerb and channels, road edging, signage and other street furniture. Auckland Transport operates a No Spray Register as part of the Auckland Council weed management strategy. Agreed ‘No Spray’ areas and maintained verges will not be sprayed.

North Auckland

Notice of intention to spray targeted weeds

Spot spraying using approved herbicide Glyphosate 510 will be carried out across various locations along main roads and selected side roads where required, on traffic islands, roundabouts, kerb and channel, retaining walls and footpaths. 

Spraying will occur in the following locations:

  • Devonport - Calliope Road, Vauxhall Road, Bayswater Avenue, Albert Road, Old Lake Road, Lake Road.
  • Milford - Commodore Parry Road, Ihumata Road, Inga Road.
  • Takapuna - Anzac Street, Auburn Street, Barry's Point Road, Burns Avenue, Esmonde Road, Fred Thomas Drive, Hurstmere Road, Killarney Street, Kitchener Road, Lake Road, Taharoto Road, Northcote Road, Wairau Road.
  • Torbay - Deep Creek Road, Glamorgan Drive, Killarney Avenue, Carlisle Road.
  • Sunnynook - Sunset Roat, Sunnynook Road.
  • Forrest Hill - Forrest Hill Road, Tristram Avenue.
  • Browns Bay - Browns Bay Road, Carlisle Road.
  • East Coast Road - Kitchener Road to Lonely Track.
  • Beach Road - Inga Road to Glenvar Road.

Other selected roads as and when required for spot spraying. 

Weed spraying will also be carried out on rural roads of the eastern North Shore area for approximately 13 weeks starting 13 February.

Auckland Transport operates a No Spray Register as well as a Code of Practice that governs all spray operations. No spraying will be undertaken in agreed No Spray areas during this period.

South Auckland

Notice of intention to spray targeted weeds

During March 2017 and weather permitting, AT will carry out spot spraying at the following locations: Tamaki River/Otahuhu Creek, Portage Rd (exclusive of), Mangere Inlet, South Western Motorway (SH 20), Queenstown Rd (exclusive of), Trafalgar St, Erson Ave, Mt Albert Rd (at Royal Oak Shopping Centre), Manukau Rd, Hayden Ave/One Tree Hill Domain, Southern Motorway (SH1), Panmure, Onehunga, Penrose and Mt Wellington.

Spraying will be concentrated around footpaths, street furniture, street-to-street walkways, bus stops, town centres, kerb and channels.

Auckland Transport operates a No Spray Register as well as a Code of Practice that governs all spray operations. No spraying will be undertaken in agreed No Spray areas during this period. The spraying will be undertaken by Liveable Streets.

East Auckland

Notice of intention to spray targeted weeds

During March 2017 and weather permitting, AT will carry out spot spraying at the following locations: Orakei, Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St Heliers, Glendowie, Glen Innes, Point England, St Johns and Ellerslie. The spraying area will be bound by the following roads or geographical features: Tamaki Dr, Riddell Rd, Campbell Rd, Wairakei St, Dilworth Ave, Bassett Rd, Shore Rd, Orakei Rd and Ngapipi Rd. 

Spraying will be concentrated around footpaths, street furniture, street-to-street walkways, bus stops, town centres and kerb and channels.

Central Auckland

Spraying will be concentrated around footpaths, street furniture, street-to-street walkways, bus stops, town centres and kerb and channels.

No Spray Register


AT operates a No Spray Register and Code of Practice that governs all spray operations. Agreed No Spray areas and maintained verges will not be sprayed.

If you are a property owner or resident who does not want the street frontage of your property sprayed with herbicide, you can request to be added to the No Spray Register.
