Why the changes were needed

These changes were needed to improve opportunities to use car sharing as an alternative mode of transport, allowing car share users easy access to inner-city facilities. Currently there are no shared parking spaces in the area.

Proposal outcome

This project will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning.

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback.

Feedback received

This proposal received positive responses from community members and stakeholders who supported the installation of a shared parking space on Beach Road, Auckland Central.

A summary of this feedback and answers to community questions and concerns:

  • Request for more carshare spaces on this stretch of Beach Road, and more loading zones in the area. Due to the limited on-street parking available it is not possible for us to meet all the requests we receive for parking changes. We seek to provide a network of different restrictions to meet the widest possible range of customers. There are several existing shared parking spaces in the vicinity, such as Anzac Avenue and Emily Place, and Loading Zones on Beach Avenue and Mahuhu Crescent.
  • More signage is needed in the area to prevent conflicts between people cycling on the cycle path and people coming and going from these parking spots. The footpath in this area is split into a pedestrian / cycling shared area and a dedicated cycling lane, though we acknowledge that both lanes tend to be used in the same way. We consider surface treatments to be more effective than signage, as people tend to look down while cycling/ walking.
