Why the changes are needed
These changes are needed to improve road safety by extending the free space over the crest of the hill on Patteson Avenue, reducing the risk of potential crashes by increasing driver visibility when approaching the crest.
Proposal outcome
This project will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning. Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback. A summary of this feedback and answers to community questions and concerns is below.
Feedback received
- This proposal received positive responses from community members and stakeholders who supported improving road safety.
- Requests were made to introduce additional broken yellow lines.
When considering parking restrictions, it’s important for Auckland Transport to consider how these restrictions will affect the operation of the road and the adjoining network.
When reviewing Patteson Avenue, we can see that there is already a large amount of parking restrictions in place along this road. In this case, further restrictions have a potential to increase driving speeds by freeing up the corridor for through traffic.
When removing parking it is also important that we have a justification for doing so to ensure that the availability of parking is balanced with the safe operation of the road. For these reasons, we will not be increasing the proposed parking restrictions along Patteson Avenue. - Requests were made to investigate cyclist safety on Patteson Avenue.
After reviewing this section of Paterson Avenue with regards to cyclist safety, we found that there have been no crashes involving cyclists or pedestrians in the last 5 years. We also found that our risk maps show this area has a low-medium collective risk for cyclists. Patteson Avenue is also approximately 8 metres wide which allows for two metres of parking on both sides and 2 metres through lanes for traffic. Two metre lanes are considered a safe width for cyclists as drivers will be able to see that there is not enough room to drive alongside a cyclist.
After taking into consideration the above points we are unable to justify further works for cyclist facilities on the section of Patteson Avenue. - Concerns were raised regarding the effect this proposal will have on exacerbating the current parking scarcity in the area.
We understand that there is demand for parking in this location and we have ensured that we are taking out the minimum amount of parking required to achieve the improvements to the current operation along this section of Patteson Avenue.
Next steps
This work will happen by November 2019, and we will let you know if there are further changes or delays. Our contractors will send notices to affected residents 48-hours prior to construction starting.
