Proposed changes for some North Shore bus services Proposed changes for some North Shore bus services

Proposal status: Feedback open until 3 April 2022

We propose to change nine existing bus services and introduce one new bus service on the North Shore. Together with Rosedale Station (a new Northern Busway station planned to open in 2025), the proposed changes would make it easier and quicker for more people to travel around the North Shore and the rest of Auckland using public transport.

Some of the proposed changes are minor:

  • The NX1, NX2 and 866 already use the Northern Busway and would therefore stop at Rosedale Station (while continuing to stop at all other busway stations)
  • The 884 and 885 North Harbour Industrial Estate loop services already use the part of Rosedale Road that will become part of Rosedale Station, and would therefore stop at the new station

More significant changes are proposed for the following bus services:

  • The 865 would serve Rosedale Station and Massey University instead of Albany Station
  • The 883 would serve the North Harbour Industrial Estate
  • The 889 would serve Rosedale Station instead of Apollo Drive and Constellation Station
  • The 907 route would be extended, to serve the Mairangi Bay shops, Maxwelton Drive, Apollo Drive and Rosedale Station

The new bus service, the 864, is proposed to connect Browns Bay, Rosedale Station and Albany Village.

Project benefits

  • More direct bus routes to the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station and therefore quicker public transport journeys for many people
  • More buses to serve the North Harbour Industrial Estate, Massey University, Browns Bay, Mairangi Bay shops and Albany Village
  • Some residential areas to be served by buses for the first time

Have your say

Your views and local knowledge are important to us and will help ensure these bus services work for as many people as possible.

Next steps

Public consultation closes on Sunday 3 April 2022. The project team may then contact specific streets or neighbourhoods to collect additional feedback.

The project team will analyse all the feedback we receive and improve our proposals where possible. The Consultation Summary and Decisions Report will be published on this webpage later in 2022.

Any changes to the bus network would be implemented when Rosedale Station opens, which is currently planned for 2025.

Rosedale Station

Rosedale Station will be a new Northern Busway station. It is proposed that Northern Busway services stop at platforms spanning Rosedale Road, while local buses use new bus stops on Rosedale Road. Pedestrians will access the station from Rosedale Road and Arrenway Drive. Construction is due to start later in 2022 and is planned to be complete in early 2025. More information about Rosedale Station.

What's proposed for your area

Albany Village

Albany Village would be served by a new bus service – the 864. The 864 would connect the village with the North Harbour Industrial Estate, the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station, and Browns Bay. By connecting Albany Village with areas to the east for the first time, the 864 would make it easier for more people to travel to and from the village by bus.

Albany Village residents and visitors should note that a new bus service, the 888, will start to serve their area later in 2022.

We don’t propose to change the 126, 888, 917 or 986 routes or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Browns Bay

Browns Bay would have more direct connections with the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station and therefore quicker journeys to and from the city centre and other locations to the south.

A new bus service, the 864 would connect Browns Bay with Rosedale Station, North Harbour Industrial Estate and Albany Village. Buses would run the length of Browns Bay Road for the first time, making it easier to travel to and from adjacent residential areas by bus.

The 865 would take people from Browns Bay and Oaktree Avenue to Rosedale Station and Massey University instead of Albany Station as at present. People travelling between Oaktree Avenue and the city centre and other locations to the south would have a more direct connection with the Northern Busway and therefore quicker journeys. However people travelling between Oaktree Avenue and locations to the north may have longer journeys, as they would no longer have a direct connection with Albany Station.

We don’t propose to change the 83, 856 or 878 routes or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Greenhithe

The 883 would serve Rothwell Avenue, William Pickering Drive and Paul Matthews Road. This means the 883 would no longer serve bus stop number 3629 on Albany Highway near Rothwell Avenue, and bus stop number 4081 near 176 Albany Highway. These stops will still be served by the 917, and we don’t propose to change the 917 route or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Mairangi Bay and Campbells Bay

As a result of customer feedback, the 907 would be extended along Ramsgate Terrace, Maxwelton Drive and Apollo Drive to Rosedale Station. This would make it easier to travel to and from the Mairangi Bay shops by bus.

We don’t propose to change the 856 route or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Massey University

It is proposed that Massey University be served by one more bus service than at present. The 865 would give Massey University a direct connection with the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station, as well as an additional, more direct connection with Browns Bay.

We don’t propose to change the 83, 861, 917 or 986 routes or how often these buses run as part of this project.

North Harbour Industrial Estate

The North Harbour Industrial Estate would be served by more buses and would have an extra connection with the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station. This would make it easier and quicker to travel to, from and around the North Harbour Industrial Estate by bus.

A new bus service – the 864 would connect the North Harbour Industrial Estate with the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station, as well as Browns Bay and Albany Village. Buses would run the full length of Rosedale Road for the first time.

Instead of bypassing the North Harbour Industrial Estate, the 883 would run along Rothwell Avenue, William Pickering Drive and Paul Matthews Road. Rothwell Avenue and Vanguard Military School would be served by buses for the first time. The 883 would still run to and from Constellation Station and Schnapper Rock.

The 884 and 885 buses already use the part of Rosedale Road that will become part of Rosedale Station, so they would stop at Rosedale Station. We are not proposing to make any other changes to these routes or how often they run as part of this project.

Significant changes are proposed for Apollo Drive:

  • Apollo Drive would no longer be served by the 889 and therefore wouldn’t have a direct connection with McClymonts Road or Albany Station.
  • The northern part of Apollo Drive would only be served by the 907. This part of Apollo Drive would therefore have a connection with the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station, but people travelling to and from the city centre and other locations to the south might have longer journeys than at present.
  • In addition to the 907, the southern part of Apollo Drive would be served by the 884 and 885, and would therefore have direct connections with the Northern Busway at Constellation and Rosedale stations.
  • The 907 would give Apollo Drive a new connection with Mairangi Bay and Campbells Bay.

We don’t propose to change the 861 route or how often this bus runs as part of this project.

Northern Busway Services

The NX1, NX2 and 866 buses already use the Northern Busway and would stop at Rosedale Station. We’re not proposing to make any other changes to these routes or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Pinehill

Significant changes are proposed for McClymonts Road.

McClymonts Road would no longer be served by the 865, and therefore wouldn’t have a direct connection with Oaktree Avenue and Browns Bay.

McClymonts Road would continue to be served by the 889. This would give McClymonts Road a direct connection with the Northern Busway at Albany and Rosedale stations. People travelling between McClymonts Road and the city centre and other locations to the south would have quicker journeys than at present.

The 889 would use Rosedale Station, so McClymonts Road would no longer have a direct connection with Constellation Station and Apollo Drive.

We don’t propose to change the 856 or 878 routes or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Rosedale

Tawa Drive would be served by buses for the first time. The 865 would take people to and from Massey University, Browns Bay and the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station.

Rosedale Road would continue to be served by the 884 and 885, which would take people around the North Harbour Industrial Estate and to the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station.

Rosedale Road would also be served by the 864. This new route would connect Rosedale Road with Albany Village, Browns Bay and the Northern Busway at Rosedale Station.

We don’t propose to change the 861 route or how often these buses run as part of this project.

Schnapper Rock

Following the introduction of traffic lights at the Rothwell Avenue-Albany Highway intersection, we can now provide a safe bus connection between Schnapper Rock and the North Harbour Industrial Estate.

Instead of using the Upper Harbour Highway and bypassing the industrial estate, it is proposed that the 883 serve Rothwell Avenue, William Pickering Drive and Paul Matthews Road. More buses would travel between the southwestern part of the industrial estate and Constellation Station, therefore making it easier for people to travel to and from this area by bus.

The following roads would become bus routes:

  • Albany Expressway between Tawa Drive and Bush Road
  • Beach Road between Bute Road and Browns Bay Road
  • Browns Bay Road between Beach Road and East Coast Road
  • Rosedale Road
    • between East Coast Road and Apollo Drive
    • between William Pickering Drive and Albany Highway
  • Rothwell Avenue
  • Tawa Drive

The introduction of any new bus stops would be subject to separate consultations.

The 888 – Albany Station, Fairview Heights, Gills Road, Albany Village loop

The 888 is a new bus service that is planned to start running later in 2022. It is being introduced following requests from customers that we serve this area, and in response to ongoing housing development.

The 888 will serve Albany Station, Fairview Heights, Gills Road and Albany Village in a one-way, anticlockwise loop. Buses will run every 30 minutes, seven days a week.

The 888 is not part of this consultation and we do not propose to make any changes to the service as part of this project. Information regarding the 888 is provided here so that consultation respondents can consider our proposals with the knowledge that when any changes are implemented, the 888 will also be running.
