Proposal update - 25 November 2020
We advised you in November 2019 that these works were scheduled to be constructed between February and May 2020. Unfortunately, construction of this project did not happen due to the impact of Covid-19. This project is part of the Safe Schools programme and is dependent on the level of funding we receive from Auckland Council. This year funding has been reduced due to Covid-19. Planning and design will continue but currently many projects, like this project, cannot be delivered in the 2020/2021 financial year.
This project now has a construction target of the 2021/22 financial year. We’ll let you know again next year more details about the commencement of works subject to budget availability.
We're making changes in your area
In October 2019, we proposed a new raised zebra crossing on Westwell Road in Belmont to replace the existing pram crossing.

Why the changes are needed
Our proposal responded to a request from Belmont School Auckland to improve the safety of students crossing the street. By installing a raised zebra crossing that gives right of way to pedestrians, we expect that this proposal will help to reduce vehicle speeds and improve the safety of both drivers and people walking.
Proposal outcome - 28 November 2019
The proposed changes will proceed to the next stage of detailed planning before being constructed. Thank you to everyone who responded to our proposal and gave us the chance to better understand your community and concerns. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.
Community feedback
Most respondents supported the proposal, noting that the new raised zebra crossing would improve safety for school children crossing the street.
Thank you for this support. We are pleased to make these improvements to pedestrian safety, especially for school children.
- Suggestion to install speed bumps on Westwell Road to calm traffic speeds, as many drivers now use Westwell Road to avoid the lights at Bardia and Williamson Avenue. The proposed raised zebra crossing will help to calm traffic on Westwell Road. This street will continue to be monitored after the installation of this raised table and if a safety issue is identified, further traffic calming measures will be considered.
- Request to install speed bumps on either side of the crossing and also on other roads, including Lake Road, Williamson Avenue, Seacliffe Avenue, and Winscombe Avenue. Westwell Road and the surrounding area will continue to be monitored after the installation of this crossing. If a safety issue is identified, further traffic calming measures will be considered.
- Suggestion to update the footpath between 12 and 12A that leads to the crossing to be more in line with the natural pattern of foot traffic, as many students cut through the grass to reach the crossing. This suggestion will be considered during the detailed design of this project, which occurs before the construction of the zebra crossing.
- Suggestion to remove the old crossing island area if not already planned. The existing islands will be removed as part of this project.
