24 September 2023
We are preparing to begin works on Karekare Road, between Piha Road, and the bridge at the Regional Park.
We are planning to start works on 9 October 2023. We expect works will take up to February 2024 to complete, weather dependant.
The road will be closed during this period of work.
While works are underway, we will need to close this road. When the road closure is in place all traffic will need to go will need to go via Lone Kauri Road.
Road Closed |
24 hours, 7 days a week. |
Works will take up to 3 months |
Karekare Road is expected to take until February 2024. Once Karekare Road is completed we will begin works on Lone Kauri Road, similar duration of three months with full road closure. |
Karekare open to residents ONLY |
All access to Karekare is open to residents only. |
24 August 2023
There is no longer a manned cordon in place at either Lone Kauri Road or Karekare Road. Both roads are open to residents only with a 30km/hr speed limit and 3.5 tonne weight limit.
20 July 2023
We will begin the next phase of permanent slip repairs in Karekare in approximately 6-8 weeks time, once designs are approved. Fulton Hogan will continue to undertake roading repairs in Karekare. Additional road closures and traffic management will be in place to support these works as and when they occur.
The initial phase of storm-damage related works has been completed, with some additional drainage works on Lone Kauri Road remaining. Preliminary safety and geotechnical investigations have been completed.
Changes to cordon restrictions at Lone Kauri and Karekare road are still in discussion to lift them and give access to the public.
22 June 2023
Good progress has been made with slip clearing on Karekare and Lone Kauri Roads, with many of the landslides now cleared. Design solutions for the major slip sites are currently being worked on.
All storm-damage related works have been completed on Lone Kauri Road, with just some drainage works remaining.
Work continues on Karekare Road (the Cutting). Slip clearing and drainage works have been completed from the bottom of the hill to Lone Kauri Road.
Hydroseeding, to help reinforce landslide sites, was completed on Karekare Road last week. Fulton Hogan have engaged a local nursery to provide local seeds for the hydroseed mix, ensuring that local vegetation is re-stablished on these slip sites to provide protection and blend into the local natural environment.
11 May 2023
We will start to clear debris from the roads in Karekare and Piha in the coming days. Weather dependent, work will start on 12 May in the morning, to remove the house and other material in the Karekare valley.
Fulton Hogan met with the property owner this week to go over how they will do this work and how to recover the vehicles at the same time. While this work is taking place in the valley, access through the loop will be restricted. Residents can enter and exit from each end, but not travel through the valley.
26 April 2023
Auckland Transport and our contractors can now increase the amount of work on the Karekare/Old Kauri loop now that Archie has been removed. Fulton Hogan aims to be in Karekare from 1 May so you’ll begin to see bigger trucks and diggers coming into Karekare to do road clearing. We hope these are a welcome sight for locals. Once started, the first goal is to clear away all the material on the road in the valley and luge areas. AT and Fulton Hogan have been working closely with Auckland Council’s Parks team to ensure the recovery work does not have a negative impact on the Kauri dieback programme.
We understand that there may be some frustration at the time taking to get roads repaired and open. You may have seen roads damaged by the floods/cyclone in other parts of the country that have already been fixed and open for use. Those slips were far less significant than those around Karekare and Piha. The slips on the west coast are complex due to the nature of the geological construction around the Karekare and Piha areas. These slips require ongoing geotechnical assessments to help guide the planning and construction process. Unfortunately, the need to conduct multiple Geotech assessments adds time to the overall programme, however taking the time now, will result in a better outcome.
