Forest Hill Road, Waiatarua 

18 April 2023

  • Initial Geotech assessment complete. Next work stage - Remedial design underway.
  • Open - speed restriction of 30km applies at number 292.
  • The road will be closed again when final resurfacing takes place - date to be advised.

Scenic Drive (between Forest Hill Road & Elevation Restaurant), Waiatarua

The long-term plan for this site is a drainage solution. A series of fan drains are installed to reduce pore pressures from within the slip. In addition to this it is recommended that we install a series of soil nails to stabilize the road pavement.

Residents that have properties within the slip site have been contacted and we are discussing the fan drain option with them.

Technical investigation continues, including geotechnical assessment and analysis of bore hole data. This technical information is being used to help inform design solutions, which are now being worked on.

We wanted to update the community about the slip site near Elevation, Waiatarua.

  • We have monitoring devices in place & this is being monitored weekly.
  • Our contractors are making minor improvements and repairs as needed.

This section of the road remains open & access restrictions are still in place

  • A weight limit of 3 Tonnes applies i.e. up to a large ute or SUV

We understand this remains a vital link for the community and we’ll continue to monitor the site, especially after heavy rain, and keep you updated with any further changes.

Please plan ahead and expect delays throughout the site.

  • Geotech assessment for one lane completed. Next work stage - remedial design underway.
  • Open - single lane with restrictions:
    • Elevation is open from 6pm Friday 3 March.
    • One-lane access with automatic traffic lights.
    • No heavy vehicles eg trucks.
    • Open to light vehicles up to 3.5 Tonnes.
    • School buses have access into and out of Piha village.
  • Please drive with caution.
  • We will continue to monitor the slips in Piha, especially after it rains, which may require us to halt buses temporarily while we ensure the road remains safe for all road users.
