Future works on the Auckland rail network Future works on the Auckland rail network

In order to continue the upgrade of Auckland's rail network, there are times when trains will not operate. During these closures train services will be replaced by bus.

Upgrades on the rail network are generally undertaken on weekends and public holidays when there are fewer people travelling.

During these planned closures, replacement buses and special timetables will operate.

Rail replacement bus services are shown in the Journey Planner and AT Mobile app as bus services. They will display the route codes RBS, RBW, RBO, RBE for Rail Bus Southern, Rail Bus Western, Rail Bus Onehunga and Rail Bus Eastern. All valid tickets and passes currently accepted on trains will be accepted on rail bus replacements.

Note: Please be advised, replacement buses do not stop at Parnell Station or Meadowbank Station.

More information on rail maintenance

  • We try to do most work at night:
    • There are some types of major construction or maintenance work that cannot be completed during these hours.
  • Some upgrades can only be done by day:
    • As it would be unsafe during darkness, or the work would be too noisy for nearby residents.
  • During rail closures:
    • Sections of track may be lifted and repaired or replaced.
    • Structural maintenance may be completed on rail bridges, tunnels or platforms.
    • The work may involve major utilities crossing the rail corridor.
    • Overhead power supply for the electric trains is shut down for everyone's safety.
  • The best time to do rail maintenance:
    • Repairs and maintenance are generally scheduled for times when the fewest passengers will be travelling.
  • Replacement buses are provided to get you where you need to go.

Note: Buses cannot accommodate bikes, scooters or large personal items.
