Old wharf operational and awaiting finishing touches

Mātiatia's old wharf has been operational for commercial operators since 17 December 2020 with just some small final touches being finished in between America’s Cup races.

The old wharf will continue to be used by local commercial operators and then be made available as an alternative berthing location when required for Waiheke ferries during the main wharf’s renewal work late 2021.

The final completion date for this work is the middle to end of February 2021.

Mātiatia main wharf toilets

The toilet project is also progressing well. To date the following work has been completed:

  • all structural walls have been erected;
  • the roof structure and structural steel columns have been installed;
  • the roof cladding has started;
  • electrical and plumbing works are planned to start on Monday, 25 January.

Project is on track for completion the first week of March 2021.

Changes to ferry boardings at Matiatia wharf

As Mātiatia wharf is a very busy facility, Auckland Transport will now be requesting passengers queue for ferries to Auckland on the Mātiatia Wharf rather than on the gangway. This will bring the customer experience at Mātiatia into line with that experienced by passengers at the Downtown Ferry Terminal and the Devonport Ferry Terminal.

This precautionary approach is to ensure a comfortable user experience in the unlikely event of heavy berthing and to prevent overcrowding on the gangway.

April 2022

Work to renew the main wharf at Mātiatia

Mid to late June 2022, AT will start work onsite to renew the main wharf at Mātiatia . This follows on from the first stage of work completed previously to the old wharf in preparation for stage two of the renewal project.

Stage two of the Mātiatia renewal project will see the replacement of the pontoon and gangway infrastructure for the southern berth. A final stage three of the project will see new pontoons and gangways for the northern berth. These will be larger than what currently exists in order to achieve better accessibility at all tides.

AT’s contractors will be building the replacement structure off-site to minimise disruption as much as possible and are expecting the works to take approximately eight weeks to complete.
