Cycling improvements set to create new connections in Mangere

New cycling connections to Onehunga, Auckland Airport and Māngere Town Centre are part of new designs for the Māngere cycling improvements consultation.

Auckland Transport (AT) is proposing new cycling designs that provide the critical missing links in the current cycling network in Māngere.

The proposed designs include separated cycling facilities, providing safe journeys; as well as connecting to key employment locations such as Auckland Airport and the Airport Oaks area.

The project is an early improvement from the Southwest Gateway Programme, which will provide safer and more reliable travel choices to move around south and east Auckland.

Manukau Ward Councillor Alf Filipaina says the new cycleways will create a safer – and better-connected – network in Māngere.

“It’s really important we have safe cycling facilities in Māngere. Often what stops people getting on bikes, is knowing it isn’t safe for cars to be mixing with cyclists, sharing the road without proper protection from vehicles. But with separated facilities, it will make easier for locals to try cycling instead of driving – especially for those shorter, local trips.”

Māngere-Otahuhu Local Board Chair Lydia Sosene also sees the benefits of the new cycleways.

"Cycling in Māngere, it’s really important that our locals have further say in this consultation process. It’s important to understand changes can still be made. Community feedback will help design the local cycling routes.There has been a growing demand for regular cycling activation activities to be held on the annual calendar in Māngere, and for families to be involved will really assist this aspiration.

“The connection of cycling journeys to Airport Oaks, the Auckland Airport area, and a direct connection to Onehunga, through the new Old Mangere Bridge, will provide safer options for moving around Māngere.”

The public consultation runs from today until Sunday 13 December and includes a number of public drop-in sessions.

The Southwest Gateway programme involves Waka Kotahi - the transport agency, Auckland Transport and Auckland Airport working together to deliver transport projects that will improve access to the airport and its surrounding area to benefit workers, travellers, tourists and freight movements.
