Kepa Road Improvements Kepa Road Improvements

Construction starts: April 2023

Construction completion: November 2023

Project background

Kepa Road in Kohimarama is an important road. It connects a lot of communities. Part of the road, beside Ōrākei Basin, is in a slip zone.

The site is located along Kepa Road in Auckland and is situated approximately 200m west of Brenton Place on the westbound side of the road. An existing retaining wall is present, but further reinforcement is required in order to strengthen and convert this section of the road from unstable to stable.

Kepa Road is a District Arterial road carrying over 23,000 vehicles per day and is also a Bus route with 6 to 14 services daily. This location on the network is key to providing an alternative access from the Port to the south and demands a high degree of resilience.

By acting now and fixing this, we can avoid the significant disruption that would happen if a major slip occurred.

Project details

The works involves stabilising and strengthening the land by building a palisade retaining wall and reconstructing the footpath. The palisade wall is in-ground, so it will not be visible from the road.

Work is under way, with completion in November 2023.

We will minimise disruption to traffic during these works by constructing a temporary lane and therefore maintain 2 lanes during the process.
