Why the changes are needed
These changes are needed to improve the safety of the area by providing pedestrians a safe place to cross the road. There is no pedestrian crossing at this end of the village, and in the summer months the village and beaches are very busy.
This location is a popular crossing point due to the public toilets located opposite the beach.
Proposal outcome
This project will proceed without changes to the next stage of detailed planning. Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback. A summary of this feedback and answers to community questions and concerns is below.
Feedback received
- This proposal received positive responses from community members and stakeholders who supported the proposed construction of a raised pedestrian zebra crossing on Maraetai Coast Road in Maraetai.
- Respondent requested that the design does not narrow the road and create a pinch point for cyclists.
The proposed raised table crossing facility does not compromise road width and therefore, does not create a pinch point for cyclist. The new Speed Limit Gateways and zebra crossing will slow traffic allowing for safer pedestrian crossings in Maraetai during busy periods such as the summer months. The slower speed limit will make drivers aware that they are entering a different environment and will reduce the risk to vulnerable road users.
Next steps
This work will happen between July 2019 and June 2020, but we will let you know if there are further changes or delays. Our contractors will send notices to affected residents 48-hours prior to construction starting.
