Proposal update
We advised you in November 2019 that these works were scheduled to be constructed by June to December 2020. This project is part of the Footpath Programme and is dependent on the level of funding we receive from Auckland Council. This year funding has been reduced due to Covid-19. Planning and design will continue but currently many projects, including this project, cannot be delivered in the 2020/2021 financial year.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a construction date until we know more about the funding allocated to the Footpath Programme next financial year (July 2021 to June 2022). We will update you again with more detail about this project in the latter half of 2021.
We're proposing changes in your area
In September 2019 we proposed a new footpath upgrade along Don Buck Road in Massey.

Why the changes are needed
The existing footpath near the school will be widened to provide a much safer choice for people walking in the area. Currently, a narrow concrete structure along this road can easily be mistaken for a footpath and the improvements will clarify that it is not intended to be used by pedestrians. Therefore, these changes are needed to improve pedestrian access and safety in the area, specifically for children walking to Massey Primary School.
Proposal outcome
The proposed changes will proceed to the next stage of detailed planning before being constructed. Thank you to everyone who responded to our proposal and gave us the chance to better understand your community and concerns. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.
Feedback received
- We’ve received feedback in support of the new footpath, noting the current situation is not safe.
Thank you for your support, we hope the new footpath will make it safer and easier for children to walk to school. - Concern that tree roots will crack the new footpath. We have received a request to remove all trees and replace them with smaller young trees.
These trees provide shade and contribute to the character of this street. Our assessments concluded that their removal is not needed to construct this footpath, and no extra maintenance burden is expected due to their presence. The appropriate pavement specifications needed to prevent cracking will be established during the next phase of detailed design.
