Scenic Drive North, Swanson

13 September 2023

The site at Scenic Drive North is very large and deep, and therefore very complex.

We are investigating a drainage solution, whereby a series of fan drains are installed to reduce pore pressures from within the slip. This is the most suitable solution from the options we have considered.

We have already started engaging with residents who have properties within the slip, when we have more detail, we will be meeting with the residents again and go through the options.

The road is open and monitored regularly, especially after heavy rain.

  • Open with 30km temporary speed limit
  • There is uneven surface on the road so drive with caution.

29 June 2023

UPDATE:

  • The site is safe and secure, and the road has re-opened with traffic management.
  • The majority of the structure has now been successfully dismantled, and the demolition crew will return tomorrow as they continue to clear rubble.
  • This will continue overnight and tomorrow Friday 30 June, as the site continues to be cleared.

Please be patient, follow signs and traffic management staff instructions.

Temporary road closure: Last night, Auckland Council received technical advice which concluded that a controlled demolition of the house at #1181 Scenic Drive North can safely take place in a managed, staged approach. The property owners and their insurer have agreed to this.

Demolition will begin this morning, and Scenic Drive North will be temporarily closed as a precaution

Detours are in place (via Te Henga/Bethells Road - for Piha/Anawhata/Karekare residents).

Please be patient, follow signs and traffic management staff instructions.

28 June 2023

UPDATE: The road is open and under traffic management and will be monitored. Please be patient, follow any signs and instructions from traffic management staff. If there is a risk to public safety, the temporary full closure will be reinstated.

Temporary road closure: Due to recent heavy rainfall, House #1181 is experiencing a slip on their land which is a safety hazard and the road on this part of Scenic Drive North is closed temporarily.

Detours are in place via Te Henga/Bethells Road, please follow signs and traffic management staff instructions.

Once further investigation and discussion with landowners has been completed, we can update the community further of when the road will be reopened.

22 June 2023

We've completed geotechnical assessments, which identify a list of sites that require permanent retaining structures. The sites have been prioritised and structural design are underway. At this stage we are unable to give an exact completion date for the designs. However, we anticipate they will all be completed before end July 2023 so physical works can start considering road closures in other locations.

These slip sites are regularly monitored by our contractors.

The following restrictions still apply to Scenic Drive North (between Puketaha & Rangimarie Roads)

  • Open with 30km temporary speed limit
  • There is uneven surface on the road so drive with caution

One lane update:

We’d like to remind the community that as of Wednesday 22 March, Scenic Drive North, (between Rangimarie Rd and Puketaha Rd), is now down to one lane only with traffic management from #1160-#1174, and priority give way.

  • The one lane will be in effect for 24 hours from Monday-Sunday, until the drilling is completed.
The drill rigs are doing geotechnical investigation for long term repairs.
  • This will ensure optimal time is spent by the drillers to do the work, instead of removing, reinstalling, and putting back the drills every day, which is time consuming.
  • Approximate time for the drilling work to be completed is 3-4 weeks, but we’ll keep you updated.
  • Please drive with caution in the area and observe traffic signals, signs and traffic controllers.
  • We will continue to monitor the stability of the roads, especially after heavy rain. We’ll also complete further assessments, as we work on the plan for permanent repairs.

  • The rigs will not be taken away until after geotechnical investigation is completed so the one lane will be in effect for 24 hours from Monday-Friday.
