New cycle routes proposed to make it safer and easier to ride a bike in Henderson
Proposed new cycle routes released by Auckland Transport (AT) will help support Henderson’s rapid growth and provide more travel options for people travelling to the train station, school and the town centre.
Proposed new cycle routes released by Auckland Transport (AT) will help support Henderson’s rapid growth and provide more travel options for people travelling to the train station, school and the town centre.
Feedback from the community in 2018 has helped AT to identify eight key cycling routes which will form the backbone of the proposed new Henderson Cycle Network. More than 500 submissions were made, with 275 new routes identified, along with a clear desire for new and safe cycling infrastructure.
Once the proposed new network is confirmed, AT will look at how to best connect routes into the surrounding neighbourhoods. The intention is to develop a comprehensive network for cycling that can be built over time, as funding becomes available.
“Cycling is a better option for the environment and makes up an essential part of our city’s shift towards a low-carbon transport system” says Cliff Wilton, AT’s Sustainable Mobility Manager.
“We know that there are already some good routes available to ride and walk in Henderson, but we want to make sure there is something for people of all ages and abilities” he says.
Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter says that improving connections for people without a car is a priority for the board.
“Our local board plan has a particular focus on helping people to get around the area without a car and enhancing the cycling network will play a big part in that.
“We are delighted so see so many new proposed routes that will allow people to get around more easily and safely than before.”
