Bethells beach washout, Bethells - COMPLETED
March 2023
The works at the washout site on Bethells Road are completed, thank you to the community for your patience during the works.
These photos below show some of the works completed to restore the road.
Bethells Road (near Steam Hauler Track), Bethells
24 November 2023
Road is open, but there are two slips on the edge of the road, near each other. One of these slip occurred in a storm in 2022, the other in 2023.
We have repair designs ready, but need to programme this work for dry weather. We will need to close the road for a period whilst these works are completed, so we would like to programme this work after the Te Henga Road repairs have been completed.

We thank everyone for their patience during this time of road closures, and we acknowledge that this was a challenging time for the community.
Caton Road, Waitākere
8 November 2023
The design for the retaining wall on Caton Road is well underway and currently undergoing final engineering reviews.
Vector will begin work on undergrounding the powerline on 9 November. This work needs to be done before the repairs can begin on the road. The power pole will be removed from Caton Road on 23 November 2023. There will be a full road closure during the works on that day. Vector will advise residents about the timing of the road closure.
The works to repair the road and is expected to get underway as soon as Vector has completed their work in late November. Whilst road works are underway, the road will be under stop-go traffic management.
This work will continue over the summer, but will pause during the holiday shut down period from 22 December 2023 to 8 January 2024. We expect works to take eight to ten weeks to complete (not including the shut down period.)
The repair work includes.
- Installing a steel pile retaining wall with a row of steel anchors to support the road.
- Improving stormwater drainage by reinstating the existing culvert and installing two manholes.
- We will also install a new pipe from the outlet of one of the manholes to take water down to the bottom of the gully – this pipe is within the property of 16 Caton.
- Reinstating the road and bringing it back to the original level.
Weather could impact our work and at times cause short delays to our work.
Access restrictions apply
- Access is from either side of the slip, during daylight hours only approx 7am-7pm, with staff controlling the traffic management
- Only 1 vehicle at a time
- A weight limit of 3 Tonnes applies i.e. up to a large ute or SUV

24 November 2023
There is a slip on the side of the road. The road is open with one lane, please use give way rules.
The design of this repair needs to take into consideration the proximity of the power lines. We are working with Vector on this, and will update the community when repair work will start.
Wairere Road, Waitākere
13 September 2023
The feasibility report for the slip site located at 331 Wairere Road was submitted with soil nails as the preferred design solution. These nails are installed deep into the soil to stabilize the ground.
We have now received approval for this approach and are in the design phase.
Open – under the following restrictions.
Traffic management & reduced speed signs in place to 30km/h. Buses & heavy vehicles can use but must travel at a slow speed.
No public access to Lake Wainamu, sand dunes, Bethells Beach & Te Henga walkways.
Waitākere Road Bridge, Waitākere
12 April 2023
Underpass closed at the Intersection of Waitākere Road & Bethells Road.
Initial Geotech assessment completed.
Extra crossing signs and Hit sticks have been installed on the approach to Bethells Road from Waitakere Road (Township end) for visibility and to improve safety.
We're working with Waitākere Primary School on alternative options for crossing safely.
The speed limit has been lowered from 1 April 2023 to 60km/hr near the intersection (between 190m north of Bethells Road and 220m south of Township Road).
