Dominion Road bike and motorbike safety trial Dominion Road bike and motorbike safety trial

Auckland Transport (AT) want to bring the number of deaths and serious injuries (DSIs) for people on bikes and motorbikes down to zero as part of Auckland’s Vision Zero strategy.

Give your feedback to the project team.

Project status: Area 1: Trial completed. Area 2: Trial underway.
Project zone: Central

Project overview

  • We are trialling safety improvements at 11 side road intersections off Dominion Rd.
  • We chose Dominion Road because, over the past 5 years, most motorbike-related trauma has been recorded on roads similar to Dominion Road - busy arterial roads with turning traffic and bus lanes.
  • We will use smart signage (which will light up when detecting turning vehicles, bikes, and motorbikes) during the trial. This will provide warnings to road users approaching the intersection.

Area 1

  • Area 1 of the trial includes 5 intersections between the Countdown Supermarket and Farro Fresh Supermarket. Construction is complete on this section and the trial has been active since 14 March 2022.
  • The 5 intersections included in Area 1 of this trial are Bellwood Avenue, Ewington Avenue, Prospect Terrace, Burnley Terrace, and Paice Avenue.

Area 2

  • Area 2 of the trial includes 6 intersections between Farro Fresh Supermarket and Queens Road. Construction is underway and this area of the trial is planned to go live in the coming months.
  • The 6 intersections included in Area 2 of this trial are King Edward Avenue, Grange Road, Milton Road, Wiremu Street, Rocklands Avenue, and Tennyson Street.

  • Improved visibility and advanced awareness around the intersections of people on motorcycles and bikes.
  • Reduction in deaths and serious injuries for people on bikes and motorbikes

  • 2020 to 2021: Construction and testing. Painted road markings, installed in-ground studs and electronic messaging signs, testing and safety reviews for Area 1.
  • March 2022: Area 1 trial begins.
  • Mid 2022: Area 2 construction and testing complete
  • September 2022: Area 2 trial begins.
  • Late 2022: Road Safety Team will review how the trial has improved safety at the intersections.

Next steps

The trial, while focusing primarily on reducing deaths and serious injuries of people riding bikes and motorbikes, also aims to change driver and rider behaviour on our roads, especially along major arterial routes that provide bus lanes, such as Dominion Road.

AT wants all of us to take more care and actively look out for people riding motorbikes and bikes at intersections. This movement towards a Vision Zero region depends on people taking care of all road users while using the network.

Part of the evaluation will be seeing how driver behaviour changed in and around the project areas, to see if this solution will work in other parts of Auckland.

If the trial reduces deaths and serious injuries and encourages safer driving, AT will be able to decide on investigating if this is a solution which could be rolled out across the network.
