How to apply

Check if you’re eligible for the secondary student concession, then apply online or visit one of our customer service centres

You must register your AT HOP card before applying. If you don’t have one, find out how to buy a HOP card.

Secondary students can apply for the concession with a digital version of their student ID. Find out more.

Option 1: Apply online

To apply online, you’ll need your National Student Number and AT HOP card details.

You only need to do this once, as your concession will automatically renew each year.

Before you start

Make sure you have your National Student Number handy.

Log into your MyAT account

Step 1: Submit your application

In your MyAT account, under ‘View all cards’:

  • select the card you want to apply the concession to
  • go to the ‘Available products’ tab
  • select ‘Apply for a concession’
  • choose ‘Secondary’ from the concession type list
  • complete the application form.

Step 2: Wait for your confirmation email

We’ll email you once your concession is loaded. You can use your concession within 1 hour of receiving your confirmation email.

Step 3: Tag on to activate

Things to know about the concession

  • Before the concession can be applied to your AT HOP card, you must present your student ID at a customer service centre to prove your eligibility.
  • Your secondary student concession is valid until the expiry date on your student ID card. Find out about concession expiry and renewal.
  • You must carry your valid student ID card with you when travelling on public transport, in case you need to prove you are eligible for a child fare.

Concession discounts apply to timetabled AT bus, train and ferry services and AT Local (excludes Waiheke and Rakino ferries).

For full fare details, see fares and discounts.

Eligibility for the secondary student concession

To be eligible, you must be a full-time secondary student between 16 and 19 years of age.

Full-time secondary students who are 19 years of age at the start of the school year are eligible for child fares, even if they turn 20 during the school year.

You may only hold only one secondary student concession.

You will not qualify if you:

  • don’t have an AT-approved student ID card
  • are a part-time secondary student
  • attend a secondary school outside the Auckland region
  • attend alternative schooling (including home schooling), unless you have a Certificate of Exemption from the Ministry of Education
  • attend study at a private training institute (for example, a language school) or tertiary institute.

Concession expiry and renewal

If you apply for your concession online using your National Student Number, your concession will automatically renew each year, as long as you are enrolled at an Auckland secondary school.

If you apply for your concession at a customer service centre, your concession will expire on the same date as your AT-approved student ID card. If you apply online, you won’t need to visit a customer service centre to revalidate your enrolment status every other year.
