Cycling, walking and scooting information
Last updated 11:59pm, 13 May 2020
We’ve pulled together information to keep you safe while cycling, walking and using a scooter in Auckland during COVID-19.
Cycling or walking
If you are walking or cycling, make sure you are keeping 2 metre distance from other people and their ‘bubbles’ during Alert Level 2. Where available please use grass berms and other available space in the road reserve to achieve this.
AT is in the process of reviewing the effectiveness of the temporary walking and cycling lanes that were introduced at Alert Level 3. Some of these lanes may continue to operate at Alert Level 2 in order to help ensure that people on bikes and walking can stay safe and maintain the physical distance requirements that are so important to helping us play it safe. We will update this page with the latest information as it comes to hand.
We are also investigating providing temporary protection at existing painted cycle lanes at key locations to further improve safety for people on bikes.
More than 100 Auckland pedestrian crossings to automatic, so you don’t have to press the button. These crossings are mostly in the city centre and around town centres. If you have to, please press the button with your elbow.
As the demand for travel around Auckland changes at Alert Level 2, we will continue to monitor the network in real time to minimise any disruptions and quickly respond to incidents that may occur.
Find out what AT is doing to help people maintain physical distancing across the region and the changes we have made on and around Queen Street .
For more information and guidelines about this see the Government’s COVID-19 website .
Electric scooters and cycles
E-scooters and e-bikes operators have received permission from government to operate again under Alert Level 2. Operators with existing licences from council can therefore resume operations without any further council approvals.
We have however been working closely with all operators on the plans for their reintroduction ensuring we also have a clear picture of how they will comply with the Covid-19 requirements set by government.
