As Auckland keeps growing, we need to continue to make smart changes to the ways we manage our roads. This includes how we manage parking.
Parking price reviews
Pricing is one of the ways to manage parking. Adjusting the price in busy areas results in a higher turnover of parking spaces. This means:
- more people are able to visit busy areas
- it's easier to find a parking space.
Where demand is high, we aim for on-street parking to be 85% full. With parking spaces being 85% full, they are well used but people can still easily find a space. This is known as the demand-based approach as part of AT's parking strategy.
We'll do parking surveys to make sure we're getting between 70% and 90%. Parking prices will then be adjusted up or down to get closer to the 85% target.
We do 2 levels of price reviews.
1. Specific paid parking area reviews
Parking survey results will be discussed with the relevant local board and business associations. We'll publish any changes at least 7 days before any they are made.
Benefits of specific paid parking area reviews
These:
- improve the availability of parking
- reduce the traffic caused by cars looking for a parking space.
2. Annual price reviews
New hourly rates are applied in existing paid parking areas in Auckland. During this process, we consider:
- reviews from the previous 12 months
- public transport prices
- the economic growth in local board areas
- the price of competitors offerings
- operational factors.
As a result of the most recent review, prices will increase in April 2025 by 50 cents per hour (with a few exceptions). See the media release about the 2025 changes.
