Glenvar Road is open to the public. Read more about this complex repair in the media release and check out the video.
Part of Glenvar Road between East Coast Road and Fitzwilliam Drive was damaged during the Auckland Anniversary Weekend. It was closed after geotechnical experts advised further slips could put property and lives at risk.
Thank you to all who live, work and visit this area for your patience. It was a complex repair but the road is now safer and more resilient to future weather events. The top end is wider than before, has 300m of kerb and channel, improved drainage, fences, a new safety barrier and a new footpath on the south side.
Bus routes will return to using this section of Glenvar Road from Sunday 15 October 2023. The AT Journey Planner and AT Mobile will reflect this change from Sunday 12 November 2023.

19 September 2023
Our new target opening date for Glenvar Road is 27 October 2023.
Fulton Hogan have faced a few challenges on this site but are ahead of schedule. We know this route is important to the community so we have been using as many resources as we can access to move the work forward.
When we open the road we will be removing all the traffic management from the detour route.

Enabling soil anchoring works in progress
As part of the road maintenance, a significant repair needs to be undertaken on East Coast road, close to Haigh Access.
This work will include a retaining wall, kerb and channel and pavement rehabilitation. To allow this works to be undertaken safely, a steel barrier will be installed, prior to works starting.

Time to complete: 13 Weeks
Time: 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday
- We will install signage, barriers and road cones the day before the retaining wall works begin.
- Please park away from the work area during the working hours above. We may need to tow vehicles parked in the work area to a safe position a short distance from the work site. We will make every effort to locate the owner before towing.
- There may be changes to road layout and access. To keep you and our team safe, please follow the instructions of the onsite traffic control team and plan for some delays.
- We will park our equipment on within the worksite, behind the barriers, during the works. Please contact us if that causes you any problems.
- This work involves heavy machinery which can create noise, vibration, and dust. All efforts will be made to minimise these disturbances as much as practically possible.
- To ensure the safety of you and your whanau, please keep young children and animals well supervised and away from the work area.

4 October 2023
The team has completed the retaining wall, but we have unfortunately come across a few obstacles as part of the works reinstatement that have caused us to be a bit behind schedule. The delay that we have experienced is 1 week.
A few of the delays that we have encountered have been the following:
- During the testing and commissioning of the waterline, it became unsuitable and unsafe for works to progress and the team were delayed.
- We have lost a couple of days due to inclement weather.
- The excavation progress was a lot slower than originally anticipated due to number and proximity to the underground un -marked services, as well as the tree roots. They had to employ a non-destructive excavation method (Hydrovac) so as not to damage them.
