Golfland Drive, Golflands - Raised Zebra Crossing Golfland Drive, Golflands - Raised Zebra Crossing

Proposal outcome
In March 2021 we proposed changes to improve the safety for people crossing the road outside of Elim Christian College Golflands Campus. After reviewing all the feedback, we are proceeding with the works as proposed. These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.
The changes we have proposed:
- Upgrade the existing school patrolled crossing outside 93 Golfland Drive to a zebra crossing that is raised to a platform level with the footpath.
- Restore and extend the footpath near the crossing.
- Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
- Install orange reflective discs, new signs and road markings to support the new crossing layout.
- Paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to join the existing broken yellow lines near the crossing. No legal parking spaces will be removed.
From our investigations we have identified that occasionally drivers speed near the crossing outside Elim Christian College Golflands Campus. Safety around schools is important to us and by making these changes we aim to slow the speed of approaching drivers and make the crossing more visible. The changes will prioritise people crossing the road, in particular school children, and improve the safety for everyone using the road.
What happens next
We anticipate the changes will be constructed between July 2021 and June 2022. We will be in touch with local residents and business prior to any construction taking place.
Community feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.
Design of the project
- Concern that the design is dangerous for cyclists, forcing them to move away from the kerb and into the moving traffic.
The raised zebra crossing side islands are necessary to minimise the distance that people need to cross and provide increased visibility of the crossing. The raised zebra crossing will further slowdown drivers and make it safer for cyclists to take the lane at the crossing point. We believe that the proposal will be safer for cyclists as opposed to the existing situation, which has no speed calming measures at the crossing point. - Concern that raised zebra crossings are dangerous and create traffic issues.
Raised zebra crossings have been proven to be an effective method of slowing down drivers to 30km/h or less. Slowing down speeds in residential areas near schools is essential to ensure pedestrian safety.
Traffic congestion
- Concern that the proposal does not address congestion issues on Golfland Drive during school pick up and drop off, and that the raised zebra crossing will only exacerbate congestion.
We appreciate that there is significant congestion around Elim Christian Collge during school pick up and drop off. Our community transport team are continuing to work with the school to improve driver behaviour during school pick up and drop off times and are encouraging active modes of travel in order to help with these concerns. - Concern that Golfland Drive is only congested during school pick up and drop off hours, which does not warrant a need for a permanent raised, zebra crossing.
Although the road is congested during school pick up and drop off hours school children are not the only pedestrians identified to be crossing at these times. A raised zebra crossing has been proven to be effective at slowing vehicle speeds on roads with high pedestrian demand, which is essential to ensure pedestrian safety.
Speeding
- Concern that the proposal will not resolve the current speeding issue on Golfland Drive and that more speed calming measures need to be put in place.
Thank you for your feedback, Auckland Transport have adopted an area-based focus for 2019 onwards for implementing speed calming measure on Golfland Drive and the surrounding area. The plan will put measures in place to ensure that drivers are travelling at appropriate speeds and to the road conditions of the area. The programme will further focus on areas that have been prioritised to reduce the incidence and impact of crashes. This is based on several factors: the number of crashes, safety risk, traffic speed, land use and concerns raised by residents and their elected representatives. Currently, Golfland Drive has not been identified in the first group of areas within our Residential Speed Management programme as other areas in the region are experiencing a higher safety risk. We have added your comments to our database to indicate support for safer speeds in your residential area. More information, including the residential areas that will be prioritised for further investigation can be viewed on the Residential Speed Management Programme page on our website
Other queries
- Query regarding the proposed roundabout at Corta Bella place and Golfland Drive and whether this proposal is still being considered?
Our review of the Corta Bella/Golfland Drive intersection finds that it is operating relatively safely and that the crash history suggests it is a low risk intersection. While we understand that congestion around the school gate can be frustrating, a roundabout at this intersection is unlikely to have a significant effect on these issues around the school gate. Given the current operational and safety performance of the intersection we cannot justify installing a roundabout here at this time.
We're proposing improvements in your area
Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them. We are proposing some improvements to your area and are asking for your views.

- We’ll post the outcome of this proposal and a summary of community feedback on this webpage.
- We can email you the proposal outcome as soon as it’s ready – just select that option when you fill in the survey.
More information
- This project is part of the Safe Schools Programme, which Auckland Transport has developed in partnership with schools, school communities, Local Boards and key stakeholders including NZTA and the New Zealand Police. The aim of the programme is to deliver a Safe System approach to road safety around schools and reduce congestion by implementing various initiatives.
- This project is supported by the Regional Fuel Tax.
Golflands: Safe with us
Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Golfland Drive are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
