Proposal status: Closed

Project zone: South

Proposal outcome

From 06 September to 20 September, we sought feedback on the proposed pedestrian crossing at the intersection of McDonald Road and Portage Road.

  • We received two responses.
  • The two submitters told us the proposals would benefit the community.
  • We are proceeding with the proposal as a part of the wider West Papatoetoe Residential Speed Management programme.

Next steps

We anticipate construction for the proposed changes to be completed by December 2023.
We will be in touch with nearby residents prior to any construction taking place.

Project overview

Between October and November 2022, we sought community feedback on the Papatoetoe West Residential Speed Management Programme.

In the feedback we received a suggestion to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of McDonald Road and Portage Road.

Our observations confirmed many students from several nearby schools and the adjacent preschool cross at this location. In response, we are extending the kerb at the intersection of McDonald Road and Portage Road to increase pedestrian safety.

Proposed road safety improvements

The proposal that we consulted on aims to increase pedestrian safety by encouraging slower vehicle turning speeds into McDonald Road, reducing the crossing distance for pedestrians, and discouraging unsafe U-turn manoeuvres at the intersection.

These improvements require the removal of six on-street car parks on Portage Road and three on McDonald Road. This will ensure cars do not block the view of people crossing the road and will improve visibility for vehicles turning out of McDonald Road.

We understand the removal of parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised it as much as possible while still creating a safer road and crossing facilities for pedestrians.

Project background

Papatoetoe: Safe with us

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around McDonald and Portage Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
